Role Summary
As Deputy Head of Building Control, you would:
Manage a team of Building Control inspectors, including specialist, qualified, and trainee inspectors.
Lead on complex and high-risk construction projects, including higher-risk buildings covered by the Building Safety Act.
Oversee plan assessments, site inspections, compliance decisions, and enforcement activities.
Act as a key liaison with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) and regional building-control partnerships.
Deputise for the Head of Building Control when required.
Help drive service performance, quality management, staff development, and customer service standards.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure compliance with the Building Act 1984, Building Safety Act 2022, and Building Regulations 2010.
Manage and allocate complex projects, including high-risk and in-scope buildings.
Conduct plan checking and site inspections.
Investigate dangerous structures, demolition matters, complaints, and unauthorised works.
Lead enforcement actions and, where necessary, provide expert evidence in court.
Mentor and develop Building Control staff.
Participate in dangerous-structures emergency response arrangements.
Essential Requirements
The successful candidate is expected to have:
Level 3 Registered Building Inspector qualification.
Degree (or equivalent experience) in Building Control, Building Surveying, Construction, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
Chartered membership of a relevant professional body such as:
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE)
Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
Strong knowledge of Building Control legislation and professional practice.
Experience managing staff, mentoring colleagues, or leading major projects.
Ability to motivate teams, manage workloads, and deliver service objectives.
