We are seeking a reliable, patient and confident Personal Assistant to support our 15-year-old son in East Grinstead for around 4 hours per week.
The role focuses on helping him access the community, enjoy activities he loves, and build independence and confidence outside the home. He enjoys parks, nature walks, gardens, castles, zoos, beaches, quieter shopping trips, cooking, reading, Nintendo games, swimming in calm sessions, animated films, and occasional visits to cinemas and attractions when they are not busy. Familiar routines and repeat visits to known places are important.
He is non-verbal and communicates using Makaton, facial expressions and vocal sounds, and understands spoken language well. Experience with Makaton is welcome but not essential.
We are looking for someone calm, observant and confident in providing clear, consistent boundaries. He can become frustrated when things don’t go as expected and may at times shout, scream or bite his hand, so remaining steady and supportive is essential.
He is sensitive to noise and prefers quieter environments, often using ear defenders. A gentle, structured approach in low-stimulation settings works best.
This role would suit someone with experience supporting autistic young people or additional needs, but the most important qualities are patience, reliability and a positive, understanding approach.
