Summary
Peterborough Limited are recruiting for a permanent Visitor Experience Manager to work in Peterborough Flag Fen.
Flag Fen is designated as a scheduled ancient monument for its internally significant archaeology. Although not designated for nature, it provides important habitat for red listed species that thrive in the fen edge wetlands. Our vison for the future is to develop and implement a fenland restoration project, that will not only help the site cope with the effects of environmental change and the gradual desiccation of the fens, but also connect people to Flag Fen’s countryside through experiences that inspire, educate and entertain, leading people to share and develop our vision. We want our visitors and stakeholders to ensure that Flag Fen is accessible for people of all ages to discover wildlife and connect with nature and the rich pre-historic discoveries that we are able to showcase.
As a conservation champion and lover of all things outdoors, you’ll help to care for and enhance the rare and protected habitat at Flag Fen. You will look after this archaeologically significant and rich landscape. Come rain or shine, your enthusiasm will inspire others as you strive to ensure that this landscape is safe and beautifully presented.

We are a small team that has ambitions to work with many stakeholders from local landowners, community environmental groups and activity providers. Our vision is to work on landscape-scale conservation, this requires us to build relationships and to work with numerous partners like the RSPB, Natural England, Anglian Water, the Environment Agency and Historic England.
General Purpose
To create a safe and welcoming environment for customers, including a well presented café, gift shop and information about how visitors can enjoy their day at Flag Fen.
This is a key site management team role, reporting to the deputy general manager, you will split your time between Front of house operational delivery and administration tasks approx. 75/25
Key Deliverables
Visitor experience & operational leadership
Lead and motivate the visitor service team to provide a consistently warm welcome, excellent customer service, and accurate visitor information.
Act as part of the Duty Manager rota, supporting smooth day-to-day operations and resolving issues as they arise.
Daily housekeeping tasks
Foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture built on transparency, dignity, and respect.
Manage the profitability of the retail outlet, including strong merchandising standards, price integrity, stock control and customer service.
Ensure robust cash handling and banking processes across visitor admissions, retail and catering, including end-of-day cashing up, safe procedures, and accurate reconciliation in line with company policy.
Catering supervision
Manage daily catering operations to deliver a high-quality and profitable food and beverage service.
Prepare and deliver quality food and beverages, ensuring speed, consistency, and presentation standards.
Deliver the company-approved menu and maintain menu availability through effective stock control and ordering.
Monitor and maintain catering KPIs including cost of sales, waste, labour percentage and profitability.
Manage stock levels to maximise availability while minimising wastage.
Ensure all cash handling, till procedures and banking processes are followed accurately and securely.
Ensure equipment, furniture and work areas are cleaned, maintained and fit for purpose; report and log breakages/defects and arrange resolution.
Support profitable menu development, keep up to date with food trends, and source/on-board suppliers when required.
Compliance, safety and standards
Ensure you and your team operate at all times in a fully food safety compliant way (including HACCP / food safety management plan).
Actively follow and lead your team to deliver company policies and procedures
Ensure excellent hygiene standards and professional presentation across the team.
Attend training and staff meetings as required and ensure required compliance training is completed.
Requirements - Experience:
Experience supervising a team and delivering excellent customer service in a public-facing environment.
Experience in managing or supervising either a retail or catering operations
Experience managing food safety systems (food safety management plan / HACCP).
Experience managing stock control, ordering, wastage reduction, and supplier relationships.
Experience with till management and banking procedures.
Good written and numerical skills; able to maintain records and basic financial/admin processes.
Experience of managing a safe environment for staff and customers
Experience of using health and safety systems
Very good management of visual quality standards in a shop/ welcome and café environment
Requirements - Qualifications:
Valid driving licence.
Requirements - Personal Characteristics:
A fervent interest in outdoor activities and habitat conservation.
Deep-rooted passion for heritage and environmental preservation.
Adept at both written and verbal communication.
Ability to teach both contemporary and traditional skills.
Mastery over multitasking, time management, and priority setting.
Can thrive both as an individual contributor and within a team dynamic.
Tech-savvy with a flair for promoting sites on digital platforms, especially social media.
