Summary
The key aim of this role is to control and monitor operations of the boiler and turbine to ensure the optimum generation of steam.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Operational:
• Monitor, report on and improve plant performance by operating the turbine and boilers and coordinating incoming and outgoing waste.
• Optimise plant processes by measuring and controlling temperature, flow and pressure using instrumentation, gauges and the DCS control system, and take corrective action where required.
• Record readings accurately and maintain a clear, up-to-date shift log of daily operations.
• Respond effectively to planned and unplanned repairs, blockages and changing plant conditions, including emergency situations.
• Respond promptly to alarms, faults and operational issues to maintain safe and efficient plant performance.
• Operate the overhead waste crane in line with plant procedures, protocols and operational requirements.
• When required, carry out plant attendant duties, including loading and unloading vehicles and using an FLT to maintain a steady supply of raw materials and remove ash waste.
• Ensure plant cleaning schedules are completed to the required standard.
• Work safely at height and in confined spaces when required.
• Undertake any additional training required by the company.
Health and Safety Responsibilities:
• Maintain a high standard of housekeeping across the plant at all times.
• Follow safe working practices in line with the company’s health and safety policies and procedures.
• Take an active part in fire drills and evacuation exercises.
• Report all health and safety concerns promptly and proactively.
Experience/Qualifications/Skills:
Essential:
• experience and understanding of boiler operations or heavy industry.
• A reliable, motivated and collaborative approach to teamwork.
• Physical capability to carry out manual handling and lifting as required.
• Qualifications in Maths and Science to at least GCSE grade C / Level 5, or equivalent.
Desirable:
• knowledge of computers and DCS systems.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
• A background in process, mechanical, electrical or instrumentation engineering is highly advantageous, ideally gained through an apprenticeship.
• Desirable: experience of COSHH and HAZOP.
• FLT and/or FLS qualifications are advantageous.
• Highly desirable: City & Guilds in small thermal plant for heat and power production, BOAS, or an equivalent qualification.
