Summary

Lead Chess Coach (also for Assistant and support)

Primary Schools | Part-time | Kent (local commuting around Sevenoaks/TWells district, also Medway and SE London)

LearnChess Academy is a long-established school enrichment provider, delivering fun, structured
chess sessions primarily in Kent primary schools and similar.
We are not a chess club and we do not train elite players.
Chess is used as an educational activity to build children’s thinking skills, confidence, focus, and
positive behaviour in a supportive, enjoyable environment.
This is a child-facing, school-based role with clear safeguarding expectations. We are looking for
people schools trust: calm, professional, and reliable, but also warm, engaging, and fun to be
around.
Who we’re looking for
Successful LearnChess coaches combine:
 Calm authority when leading groups
 A positive, energetic, and engaging style
 Confidence setting boundaries and managing behaviour
 A genuine enjoyment of working with children
Chess ability helps, but personality, teaching approach, and group leadership matter more.
This role suits:
 Teachers or Teaching Assistants (including semi-retired)
 Sports or enrichment coaches
 Youth workers
 Scouts / Guides leaders
 Experienced childcare professionals
 Confident graduates with strong group leadership experience
Applicants of all ages are welcome, provided you can commit reliably across the academic year.
The role
 Deliver after-school chess sessions in Kent primary schools
 Typical groups of 10–15 children (occasionally larger), aged mainly 4–11
 Use LearnChess lesson frameworks and resources (training provided)
 Create a calm, safe, and enjoyable learning environment
 Communicate and maintain professional relationships with school staff and parents
 Transport, set up, and pack away equipment between venuesEssential requirements
 Experience working with children in groups
 Strong presence and group management skills
 Reliable, punctual, and professional approach
 Willingness to follow LearnChess delivery standards
 Driving licence and access to a car (mandatory — equipment supplied)
 Right to work in the UK
DBS & safeguarding
 An Enhanced DBS (ideally on the Update Service) is strongly preferred
 Candidates without a DBS may still apply but must obtain and pay for an Enhanced DBS
before starting. We cannot deploy coaches into schools without DBS clearance
Chess experience
 Roughly 1000+ rating or equivalent practical knowledge is desirable
 Full teaching resources and ongoing support provided
Pay & contract
 Self-employed, part-time role with variable hours
 Flexible - typically to around 10 weekly sessions, with opportunities to increase as new schools and
services come on stream, including summer special events and tournaments
 Pay: £20-£40 per session (dependent on role, experience, and responsibilities)

Email enquiries@learnchess.co.uk with:
 A short introduction covering your experience with children and your teaching
style/personality
 Your CV
 Your postcode/location (Kent-based commuting)
 Confirmation that you drive and have access to a car
