Summary


The Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead is looking to appoint a Trust Specialty Registrar in Oral and Maxillofacial Services for a 12 month placement.

This post would be suitable for a senior maxillofacial candidate wishing to gain further experience in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery in a specialist centre. It is envisaged that the successful applicant will have existing experience.

The QVH is a well recognised regional maxillofacial unit, operating on a "hub & spoke" basis to provide services for a significant proportion of the South East.

The successful applicant will be exposed to elective and emergency oral and maxillofacial surgery patients and will gain experience in how to approach clinical situations starting from the initial consultation, making the diagnosis, to clerking and preparing the patients for theatre, post-operative management and short, medium and long term follow-up in outpatient clinics.

There is excellent opportunity to gain experience in the diagnosis and treatment of the injured patient and to gain experience on consultant led ward rounds and in consultant led theatre lists and also in outpatient clinic settings. There is a monthly clinical governance meetings in which the post holder is expected to actively participate as well as quarterly training for the whole department.





Duties will also include general ward care, upkeep of medical records and involvement in clinical audit. The duties will be varied depending upon the exigencies of the service. Opportunities for research are available and successful candidates will be encouraged to participate.

The current rota commitment is 1:6 on a non-resident on call shift pattern for weekday which includes for prospective cover for colleagues study/annual leave and is part of a tiered rota pattern. There is a 1 in 9 weekend on call rota also. Rota patterns can be subject to change according to the exigencies of the service and should they do so we will consult with you.

There is a fully equipped maxillofacial laboratory on site at QVH and in addition we have "in-house" 3D planning available to us.

The role will follow the existing training pattern in Oncology and Deformity and trauma will be expected to attend theatre, Oncology MDT’s and the Consultants’ clinics for both Maxillofacial & Urgent Cancer referrals as well as the clinic patients.

We will provide training and experience in all aspects of surgery from initial diagnosis and treatment planning through detailed pre-op planning and surgical technique to post-operative care and follow up.

If the successful candidate has sufficient experience they will be expected to contribute to teaching programme for the junior staff and participate in the Audit and M&M meetings.

Participate in elective and trauma outpatient clinics. Arrange surgery for patients where appropriate in consultation with senior colleagues. Manage post-operative patients, manage wounds and complications in conjunction with dressing clinic nurses and senior colleagues.

Undertake operating lists in conjunction with consultants for a range of cases, such as skin cancer reconstruction, breast reduction and trauma and for more complex cases, such as free flaps or complex lower limb reconstruction. Manage patients appropriately pre- and post-operatively. Organise post-discharge follow-up.

Undertake ward rounds and liaise/engage constructively with members of the multi-disciplinary team to draw up appropriate treatment plans.

The postholder have exposure to a wide variety of plastic surgery patients, both trauma and elective and will liaise/engage constructively with members of the multi-disciplinary team to draw up appropriate treatment plans.
