Summary
Personal assistant/support worker required for a nearly 12 year old boy with autism and limited speech. Young person experiences sensory sensitivities, particularly to loud or unexpected noises and may become anxious or distressed in noisy environments. The personal assistant/support worker should be understanding of his sensory needs and be able to help him manage these situations calmly with patience, reassurance and support.
The role involves providing consistent one-to-one support to enable the young person to access leisure and community based activities, develop confidence and enjoy positive experiences outside the home and encouraging participation. The personal assistant/support worker will be expected to build a positive relationship with the young person and support his individual needs in a safe and respectful manner while ensuring safety
Duties include
*Supporting access to community activities and outings
*Encouraging independence and social interaction
*Providing reassurance and emotional support when young person becomes anxious, distressed or overwhelmed
*Being aware of/and responding appropriately to sensory, particularly around noise and triggers
*Supporting the young person to try new experiences at a pace that is comfortable for him
*Supporting communication and understanding, adapting approaches to meet young persons individual needs
*Building a positive, trusting and supportive relationship with the young person
*Liaising with parents regarding activities, routines and support strategies
*Ensuring the young persons safety and wellbeing whilst out in the community
*Following guidance and agreed support plans provided by family
Hours of Support:
• Hours to be agreed
• Days and times to be agreed
• Some weekend support required
Location: Bradford
Rate of Pay: To be agreed
Experience of supporting young people with autism is desirable. Applicants should have an understanding of autism, sensory sensitivities and the importance of providing patient, consistent support tailored to individual needs.
A full driving licence and access to a vehicle is preffered but not essential
