We are seeking a motivated and skilled Band 6 Senior Healthcare Scientist to join our established and supportive Respiratory Physiology and Sleep Service at UHDB.

This is an excellent opportunity for an autonomous respiratory physiologist to work within a dynamic multidisciplinary team, delivering high‑quality diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory and sleep services across acute, community and multi‑site settings.

You will act as a senior practitioner, contributing to the clinical leadership, supervision and ongoing development of respiratory and sleep physiology services, while maintaining excellent standards of patient care, safety and governance.

Experience of performing challenge tests and Non-Invasive Ventilation would be advantageous.

The role is based at Queens Hospital Burton with regular rotation to Royal Derby Hospital and community diagnostic centres. The ability to travel between sites is an essential part of this role, including Sir Robert Peel and Samuel Johnson Community Hospitals.

Applications from individuals who have recently qualified or who do not yet meet all Band 6 criteria are actively encouraged.

UHDB is able to offer a structured Band 6 Annex 21 developmental post, with tailored support and supervision to develop skills in areas such as:
• Sleep study analysis and reporting
• Authorisation and review of lung function investigations
• Supervision and development of junior colleagues

• Work as an autonomous practitioner, independently performing, interpreting and reporting a wide range of respiratory and sleep investigations.
• Apply clinical judgement to adapt, modify or postpone investigations based on patient condition, clinical indication and safety considerations.
• Produce accurate, timely and clinically relevant reports.
• Undertake and support sleep diagnostics and treatment pathways, including sleep study analysis, CPAP initiation and follow‑up, in line with national and local guidelines.
• Participate in delivering care involved with NIV patient pathways.
• Contribute to the day‑to‑day operational running of the service, escalating issues and reporting regularly to the departmental managerial lead.
• Provide supervision, training and support to trainee and junior colleagues.
• Ensure the safe use, quality control, calibration and basic fault‑finding of specialist respiratory and sleep equipment, in line with Trust policies and professional standards.
• Recognise and respond appropriately to clinical deterioration or adverse events, initiating emergency procedures and escalation in accordance with Trust policy.
• Participate in clinical audit, service evaluation and quality improvement, supporting the ongoing development and effectiveness of respiratory and sleep services.
• Building a portfolio to work towards STP equivalence is strongly encouraged as part of this role.
