Summary
HOTEL MANAGER
The Stotfield Hotel is an independent hotel set on the Moray Coastline in Scotland in the friendly town of Lossiemouth. Overlooking the magnificent Moray Firth and neighbouring the ancient Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth Bowling Club and nearby RAF Lossiemouth to name but a few there is a wealth of fabulous local businesses as well as most of the national names you would expect nearby. We are close to Inverness and Aberdeen which are great for day trips etc, but of course Moray is a great place to live and work, as well as visit. If your active you can be Skiing the mountains in the morning and Surfing or Sailing the seas in the afternoon – or maybe if you are not quite so active you could be visiting a Distillery, a Woolen Mill, a Castle or take the kids hunting Nessie.
We are seeking a Hotel Manager to look after the day to day operations of our hotel. You’ll be able to plan head using our various systems to ensure that your team have all the knowledge and skills that they need to succeed and look after your guests. You’ll have the skill of being hands on with your team in all departments but also have the ability to float above and make sure that everything is running smoothly, and be able to quickly step in and correct mistakes before they happen, ensuring that the guest always gets the best possible service.
We’re very proud of our stable and established team, most who have been with us for many years, but as we step back from the day to day operations our team would benefit from someone to bounce ideas off and help them implement some new and fresh ideas to help grow the business, that’s where you come in. Our team are good at what they do, and they have some very good and resilient practices, however they value our open, understanding and supportive local management support structure.
We’re looking for someone who has at least 3 years experience in hotel management, so you will have successfully headed up most hotel departments (at least Front Office, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage Service and Kitchen Management). You might currently be a deputy manager looking to step up to your first hotel manager role or you might simply already be at that level and looking for a change of scenery as part of a friendly team.
The owners work part time at the property, so we will support you by way of guidance and frequent coffee chats, this can be good as you can usually get answers and decisions that you need quickly. Think of us a bit like your head office support as we look after most Sales and Revenue, HR, Health & Safety and Finance etc, however you will have a part to play in each of these, albeit your main focus must always be the Staff, the Guests and the Hotel Product as a whole; Rooms Division and Food & Beverage.
As you already have good experience in hotels and hospitality you will know that it is not all glamour so for the good running of the business as needed you will be willing and able to safely change a lightbulb or a toilet seat, unblock a drain, cook breakfast, wash some dishes or clean a room etc if needs – however none of these should be the norm if you are well organised and have your team behind you, they should already have it all in hand.
You will need to have good written and verbal skills as you will need to keep the owners updated, respond to any guest feedback, schedule staff plans etc and this will all use your computer skills as we use various systems which are vital to the smooth running of the hotel. You’ll have a good knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word etc and also Reservation systems etc too.
We are a small business and a local hotel so you will enjoy working in that environment, it can be rewarding, it’s always good to know who you are working for and also you’ll know your customer and importantly they should know you. We are professional, however we do this with an informal twist, therefore you won’t be stuck at your desk with admin, you will most often be on the floor checking that all is in hand. Also, leave your suit at home, much more suitable for our hotel is an open neck blouse or shirt and trousers or something similarly smart, unless there is a formal event in the hotel.
As the Hotel Manager you have the responsibility for the day to day running of the hotel, your team and your guests as well as the safety of everyone at the hotel. We do not dictate shifts for you, but expect you to work around 45 hours per week, be willing to take control with emergencies etc, therefore you are always the Duty Managers or Key Staffs port of call for escalation when they require help. You’ll prioritise your own workload and tasks to ensure you manage to do all that you need to as well as being in the right place at the right time; ie. Ensuring that all group arrivals and meals go well, events are run correctly until the last guest has left etc. We are proud that we have very few guest complaints, however on this occasion you will take this and resolve it to the guests satisfaction.
In return we offer a salary of £33k, also your share of pooled tips via our tronc system, entry into the company pension scheme. The hotel also has a small private flat at the back if you need accommodation, we can offer this to you free of charge. In addition to your salary, we can also offer occasional bonus schemes after your settling in period. If you have a partner then depending on their experience we may be able to offer them a job too. We also close for 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year.
If you feel this position is suited to you and you would like to apply, please send an email to hr@stotfieldhotel.com marked with the subject Hotel Manager Application, letting us know a little about you and also attaching your cv. If you are looking to relocate then we can do an initial interview online then a second interview at the property.
