Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Healthcare Assistant to join our Children’s Services team. The post holder will support the delivery of high‑quality, family‑centred care to children and young people across the inpatient ward and outpatient settings.
Working as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the Healthcare Assistant will deliver delegated clinical and non‑clinical care with increased autonomy, following appropriate training and competency assessment. Duties will include undertaking enhanced skills such as Paediatric Early Warning Scores (PEWS), ECG recording, venepuncture and cannulation, supporting patient admissions and discharges, requesting blood tests, and maintaining accurate clinical documentation.
The post holder will act as a role model for Healthcare Assistants, providing guidance and support on shift, and contributing to the smooth running of the clinical area. A strong commitment to safeguarding, teamwork, communication, and delivering compassionate, child‑focused care is essential.
This role requires flexibility to work across clinical areas and unsocial hours as required, with opportunities for ongoing training and professional development.
Main Duties of the Job
• Deliver high‑quality, family‑centred care to children and young people under the direction of registered staff
• Undertake delegated clinical tasks and enhanced skills including PEWS, ECG recording, venepuncture and cannulation, following training and competency assessment
• Support patient flow by assisting with admitting, discharging, and requesting blood tests using lorenzo
• Accurately record care and observations and maintain high standards of clinical documentation
• Act as a role model and provide day‑to‑day support to Healthcare Assistants
• Observe, monitor, and report changes in a child’s condition, escalating concerns appropriately
• Promote safeguarding, infection prevention, dignity, and confidentiality at all times

The Healthcare Assistant (Band 3) will work as an experienced and integral member of the Children’s Services team, supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and family‑centred care to children and young people within inpatient and outpatient settings.
The post holder will undertake a range of delegated clinical and non‑clinical duties with increased autonomy, following appropriate training, competency assessment, and Trust policies. This includes performing enhanced clinical skills, supporting patient admissions and discharges, requesting investigations, and maintaining accurate clinical documentation. The role also involves acting as a role model and providing day‑to‑day support and guidance to junior Healthcare Assistants.
The Healthcare Assistant will work closely with the registered nursing and medical teams to ensure high standards of care, patient safety, and positive experiences for children and their families. Flexibility to work across clinical areas and unsocial hours is required.
Main Responsibilities• Deliver high‑quality, compassionate, and individualised care to children and young people under the direction of registered practitioners
• Undertake delegated clinical duties independently within scope of practice and competency, following Trust policies and procedures
• Perform enhanced clinical skills including Paediatric Early Warning Scores (PEWS), ECG recording, venepuncture, and cannulation, following appropriate training and assessment
• Observe, monitor, and accurately report changes in a child’s condition, escalating concerns promptly to the Nurse in Charge or medical team
• Support patient flow by completing admission and discharge processes and requesting blood tests and investigations via electronic systems
• Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant clinical documentation to support safe and effective care
• Act as a role model for Band 2 Healthcare Assistants, providing informal supervision, guidance, and support on shift
• Prepare, maintain, and monitor clinical environments and equipment to ensure safety and suitability for children and families
• Support and reassure parents and carers, providing age‑appropriate information and promoting family‑centred care
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding children, infection prevention and control, dignity, confidentiality, and equality
• Work flexibly across ward and outpatient areas, including supporting clinics, as service needs require
