British Creative Institute is seeking to appoint an experienced and highly skilled Primary Designated Safeguarding Lead with Qualified Teacher Status to lead safeguarding, child protection and learner welfare across our specialist post-16 SEND provision.
This is a senior safeguarding-focused role. The successful applicant must have strong experience working in education, preferably within schools, colleges or specialist SEND settings. The post requires excellent safeguarding knowledge, professional confidence, strong reporting skills and the ability to work effectively with learners, parents, carers, staff, governors, local authorities and external agencies.
The Primary DSL will take lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection across the organisation. They will ensure that all safeguarding concerns are identified, recorded, monitored, escalated and followed up appropriately. The role will involve leading safeguarding practice, supporting staff, maintaining accurate safeguarding records, managing referrals and ensuring that safeguarding systems are robust, compliant and audit-ready.
The successful applicant must have experience of working with SEND learners and must understand how safeguarding risks may present differently for learners with autism, SEMH needs, communication difficulties, sensory needs, trauma, anxiety, mental health concerns, learning difficulties or complex family circumstances. The DSL will be expected to promote a culture where safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and where vulnerable learners are supported with care, dignity and professional oversight.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Primary DSL will be responsible for leading and managing safeguarding across BCI. This will include responding to safeguarding concerns, completing risk assessments, maintaining accurate chronologies, supporting staff with safeguarding advice, and ensuring that appropriate referrals are made to MASH, social care, police, health professionals or other relevant agencies where required.
The DSL must be confident in managing safeguarding escalation, evidenced reporting and professional challenge. They must be able to communicate effectively with local authorities, parents, carers, governors and external professionals. The role will also include contributing to EHCP reviews, learner support planning, risk management, attendance concerns, behaviour support and pastoral intervention where safeguarding issues are identified.
The successful applicant must have strong knowledge of Single Central Record recording, CPOMS or equivalent safeguarding recording systems, and Learning Management Systems used within education. They must be able to ensure that safeguarding information is recorded accurately, securely and in line with statutory expectations. The DSL will also support safeguarding audits, quality assurance activity, staff training records and governor safeguarding reports.
