Contract Support Security Officer
Location: Bury College, Bury, Greater Manchester
Contract Type: Contract Support / Variable Hours
Reporting to: Security Supervisor / Facilities & Estates Management
Hours: As required (including evenings, weekends, and during term/non‑term periods)
Job Purpose
The Contract Support Security Officer will provide a professional, visible, and responsive security service across Bury College campuses. The role supports the safety and safeguarding of students, staff, visitors, and assets, ensuring a secure learning environment in compliance with safeguarding legislation, college policies, and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Security Operations
- Provide static and mobile security coverage across all designated college buildings and grounds
- Control access and egress, including visitor management and ID verification
- Conduct regular patrols to deter and detect unauthorised activity
- Monitor CCTV systems and respond to alarms in accordance with GDPR and college procedures
- Respond promptly and effectively to incidents, emergencies, and first aid situations
Safeguarding & Student Safety
- Actively support the College's safeguarding culture, particularly with regard to children, young people, and vulnerable adults
- Remain vigilant to safeguarding concerns and report any concerns immediately in line with safeguarding procedures
- Maintain professional boundaries and appropriate conduct at all times
Incident & Risk Management
- Accurately record incidents, accidents, and security breaches in written and electronic formats
- Escalate issues appropriately to senior management or emergency services when required
- Assist with evacuations, lockdown procedures, and emergency planning exercises
Customer Service & Professional Conduct
- Provide a courteous, calm, and professional presence to students, staff, contractors, and visitors
- Support college events, examinations, and high‑footfall periods as required
- Liaise effectively with college staff, local authorities, and emergency services
Safeguarding & Compliance Requirements
The successful applicant must meet all safeguarding and vetting requirements, including:
- Enhanced DBS (EDBS) Check
- A valid Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, suitable for working in an educational environment
- Applicants must be willing to undergo a new Enhanced DBS check if required
- A minimum of two satisfactory employment references, covering the previous 5 years
- At least one reference must confirm the applicant's suitability to work in a safeguarding environment involving children and vulnerable adults
- Successful completion of BS7858 vetting, including:
- Identity verification
- 5‑year employment history check
- Right to work in the UK
- Criminal record and character checks
Essential Skills & Experience
- Valid SIA Door Supervisor or Security Guarding Licence
- Experience working in a security role (education or public-sector environments desirable)
- Strong observation, communication, and report-writing skills
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and decisive under pressure
- Good understanding of safeguarding responsibilities
- Basic IT skills (incident reporting, access systems, email)
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- Experience working within a college, school, or university setting
- Conflict Management or Physical Intervention training
- First Aid at Work certification
- CCTV (Public Space Surveillance) Licence
