Summary

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.

Do you want to help shape the future of waste regulation and drive the circular economy forward?

We’re looking for two Advisors to join our Producer Responsibility or Waste Exemptions teams, helping to deliver the Government’s Resources and Waste Strategy.

You’ll work with Environment Agency colleagues, Defra, devolved administrations, and industry to reform legislation and regulation. You can make a difference.

You’ll be adaptable, self-motivated, and able to translate policy into practice. Both roles involve:

Engaging with stakeholders across government and industry, including trade bodies, to influence and implement change.
Providing technical advice internally and to external operators.
Updating GOV.UK and internal guidance, and supporting compliance and enforcement activity.
Contributing to training, communications, and implementation of reforms.
The Producer Responsibility role focuses on packaging legislation and advising on policy delivery.

The Waste Exemptions role focuses on exemptions reform, new charging, and supporting operators transitioning to environmental permitting.

We’re looking for applicants who believe a truly diverse, representative, and engaged workforce is fundamental to protecting our environment and the communities we serve.

We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, but some travel and overnight stays may be required.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You’ll have the option to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

The Producer Responsibility and Waste Exemptions teams sit in the Waste and Resources function, part of the Environment and Business (E&B) Directorate.

We’re a dispersed team and work with a wide range of technical and project teams across the country.

We promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation, and secure resources.

Experience/skills required

We invite you to demonstrate that you have the following skills and experience:

Effective communications – written and verbal.
Confidence to influence and negotiate outcomes.
Ability to build trusting and respectful working relationships.
Innovation.
Evidence and risk-based decision making.
Working on own initiative as part of a dispersed team.
The ability to make things happen.
Knowledge of environmental legislation.
You’ll use these transferable skills and your understanding of business processes to shape how we do things.

You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
