Summary

On an annual basis the output of the academic department in both clinical and basic science research is remarkable, including its leading role in multicentre national and international randomised trials and peer review scientific publications in high-ranking scientific journals. The academic team at Leeds MTC, includes a number of Honorary Senior Lecturers of the University of Leeds as Mr N Kanakaris currently acting as the Research Lead of the British Association of Pelvic and Acetabular Surgeons (BAPAS) and the Chair of the Trauma Education at the European Forum of Orthopaedic and Trauma National Societies (EFFORT), Mr P Harwood Training Programme Director of the Yorkshire and Humber Postgraduate Deanery and Mr P Foster President Elect of the British Limb Reconstruction Society (BLRS). Committed applicants with subspecialty interests to complement and enhance the skills and surgical capacity of our current Consultant team are encouraged. We are seeking an experienced Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon. For the right candidates there are opportunities to develop their own area of expertise and to enhance their chosen field of trauma interest. We seek those who have a proven track record in undergraduate and postgraduate education and research, as we are dedicated to extending the boundaries of healthcare and allowing you to expand the knowledge in your specialism for the benefit of the patient and the profession. We would like applicants who are passionate regarding passing on these skills to the next generation of doctors and healthcare professionals. This role offers an outstanding opportunity to play a key role in developing and delivering major trauma services in the region and improving outcomes for our patients. The successful applicants will work at the centre of a regional network that covers nearly three million people (adults and children) in our Major Trauma Centre, including dedicated major trauma ward, theatres and critical care facilities. As a natural hub for Yorkshire and with excellent connections to all parts of the North of England, we have worked hard to bring a local alignment to patients’ services within well equipped, modern facilities which will see services dedicated to helping critically ill patients all located together within Jubilee Wing. We are the first major multi-site hospital in the UK to have adopted this under one roof approach to patient care. The appointed candidate will join a dedicated, Consultant led, multidisciplinary team delivering focused care to patients with severe and multiple injuries admitted to the Major Trauma Centre. The successful applicant should possess S (or equivalent) in Trauma & Orthopaedics, have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) in Trauma & Orthopaedics and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register. The successful candidate must demonstrate a high level of clinical experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics to complement the high-profile service in Leeds. Applicants should have established skills in managing major trauma. Excellent communication and teamwork skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development is desirable. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share. If shortlisted, you will be required to give a 10-minute presentation on Regional Major Trauma Networks – challenges and opportunities in the current era of specialist services of the NHS INTERVIEWS WILL BE HELD: 14 July 2026 Why you should join our Team Leeds General Infirmary opened as a level 1 trauma centre on 2 April 2013. Due to its regional remit it provides responsibility of care to a population of almost 3 million. The support encompasses all aspects of trauma care, including attendance at trauma calls, co-ordination and prioritisation of patient care, and emergency admissions as well as emergency operating. The service was recently rewarded as the second busiest in England and also produced the second-best quality outcomes within the country (as per TARN data). Through the West Yorkshire Major Trauma Network, the MTC serves patients across the region from incident to rehabilitation. Each morning the team has a multi-disciplinary team meeting to discuss all major trauma patients within the hospital. Throughout the day the MTC receives acute admissions from around the region. Our Major Trauma Nurse Specialists co-ordinate the care of our patients as soon as they come through the door into the emergency department. They then follow the patient pathway through the different levels of care that are required supporting both the patient and their relatives up until and beyond discharge. The network was established in 2013 to bring together major trauma care across West Yorkshire and is a collaboration between LTHT and five trauma units in other hospitals within the region. This ensures all patients that require major trauma services have the right level of care at the right time, in the right environment. We have invested a further £8 million over the years to enhance facilities, including the creation of a dedicated MTC ward and theatre, and enhanced staffing. As well as being the second largest MTC in the country we have consistently remained in the top three for outcomes. Over the last three years, Leeds MTC has been leading the way nationally in management of major limb trauma requiring combined plastic and orthopaedic surgery, which is a huge achievement.
