Machine Shop Manager

Job Description
•Take responsibility for themselves and members of the teams to ensure work is carried out safely and in line with the company’s Health and Safety policies and procedures.
• Provide guidance and support to the Machine Shop Team Leaders, team members, promoting good engineering standards, safe working practices, continuous improvement activities, effective use of resources and the personal development of the staff employed within the manufacturing process necessary to achieve the company’s performance targets.

•Provide guidance and support to the production engineering team by being involved in discussion on all new manufacturing requirements, to establish correct method of manufacture, tooling, fixture, cycle time and cost. Ensuring that set up documents and CNC programs are being used by the shopfloor and where changes are necessary information is feedback.

•Monitor the requirements of the Master Shipment Plan – Shortage list, and support planning with expected completion dates for the work to be carried out.

•Meet daily with the Machine Shop Team Leaders to check and monitor progress against the production plan (Resource Work to List / Master Shipment Plan requirements) to ensure that it is achieved in a timely and cost-effective manner. Establishing accurate cycle times and updating the system accordingly. Ensure the highest priority job is always worked on.

•Monitor daily machine hours, loss times, efficiencies, labour and machine utilisation to improve OEE and effective utilisation.

•Participate in the Weekly Capacity Meeting, reviewing the current capacity graphs for all key resources and the utilisation and performance of each.

•Review manning levels and make recommendations to ensure the levels are suitable to successfully achieve the requirements of the production plan.

•Monitor and report the performance of the Machine Shop based on machine utilisation and actual verses estimated time for the job. Provide monthly reports for communication to the team and Senior Management. Monitor & manage machine shop spend on tooling and fixtures within budgets.

•Be involved in the ‘make in’ or ‘buy out’ decisions, working with the Planning and Purchasing staff to make timely decisions to protect the lead times for delivery and the required Full Kit dates of the plan.

•Monitor Non-Conformance Reports and Quality Hold Notes affecting the flow of production, working with the respective team leaders to implement improvements which will prevent reoccurrence.

•Support the work of the NCR system, establishing root cause and addressing corrective and preventative actions necessary to prevent recurrence.

•Support the Machine Shop Team Leaders with their communication boards, keeping the boards

•Meet daily with the Machine Shop Team Leaders to check and monitor progress against the production plan (Resource Work to List / Master Shipment Plan requirements) to ensure that it is achieved in a timely and cost-effective manner. •With the help of your Team Leaders, instruct and motivate the workforce, keeping them regularly informed of site communications.

•Support the work of the apprenticeship programme and ensure that the training plans and schedules with regards practical development around the machine shop are being followed.
•Encourage 5S standards of working to give our customers total confidence in the Quality of our Products through the way we are work and the conditions we operate in.

•Make recommendations for new machinery or equipment, preparing any relevant supporting documentation for justification and submitting a Capex request.

•Support and advise the Sales and Engineering departments with any relevant manufacturing and technical issues.

•Performance management of immediate direct reports (supervisory team) including holding Employee Review Meetings with each member of the team.

•Continually review training needs and personal development of employees and ensure the ‘skill set’ of the staff employed are adequate to meet the business needs of the company, including maintaining training records and the skills matrix.

EXPERTISE

• Experience of managing CNC machine shop for high strength grade materials with horizontal milling, turning, VMCs, spark and wire cut process.

• Considerable experience in all aspects of workshop practice.

• Experience in all aspects of Production management i.e. - Materials Management, Inventory Control, Production Control, and Purchasing Management.

• Experience of supervising and managing a large team of employees

• Experience of advanced manufacturing tools and techniques to monitor and improve
