Working as an English Supply Teacher offers the chance to teach across a range of classrooms, maintain work–life balance, and gain experience in different school environments while supporting pupils’ learning and progress.

Duties as English Supply Teacher:

  • Deliver pre-planned English lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Support pupils with reading, writing, and spoken language activities
  • Maintain positive behaviour and clear classroom routines
  • Adapt teaching approaches to suit different abilities and learning needs
  • Encourage pupil engagement and confidence in English lessons
  • Follow school policies and procedures while on placement
  • Provide feedback to departments or cover managers as required
  • Uphold safeguarding, welfare, and health and safety responsibilities at all times

Ideal English Supply Teacher:

  • Qualified Teacher Status or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification
  • Experience teaching English at secondary level
  • Strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm for English education
  • Confident classroom and behaviour management skills
  • Flexible, reliable, and adaptable approach to supply work
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
