We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Highway Inspector to join our team, responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and compliance of our road network. In this role, you will carry out regular inspections of highways, accurately recording conditions and identifying any defects or maintenance needs. Your ability to assess priorities and organise necessary works will be key to maintaining high standards across the network.
You will also play an important role in overseeing the completion of maintenance activities, ensuring that all works are delivered to specification. Following completion, you will review and verify contractor invoices, confirming that services have been carried out satisfactorily before authorising payment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to delivering safe and efficient highway operations.
Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.
About you
We are looking for a capable and motivated Highway Inspector to join our team, playing a key role in maintaining and improving the local highway network. In this position, you will liaise and negotiate effectively with a range of stakeholders both within and outside the Council, building strong working relationships to secure cooperation and achieve positive outcomes. You will gather, analyse, and interpret data, carrying out straightforward calculations relating to areas and quantities, while investigating issues on site to establish facts and produce clear, accurate reports and correspondence.
You will be responsible for managing your own workload to meet deadlines, working both independently and collaboratively within established procedures. Strong IT skills are essential, including the use of word processing and spreadsheet packages. A solid understanding of equality and diversity and its impact on service delivery is required, alongside demonstrable knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Highways Act, New Roads and Street Works Act, and Health & Safety regulations. A qualification in Civil Engineering (such as BTEC) or equivalent experience is expected.
This role involves regular site visits across the Borough, including inspecting highways and accident locations, taking measurements, and responding to emergencies when required, sometimes outside normal working hours. The successful candidate will be adaptable, organised, and committed to delivering a high-quality service.
This is a public facing role so you’ll need to show off your fluency in speaking and writing English.
