Summary
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is recruiting a fixed-term Senior Clinical Fellow in Radiology with a specialist interest in Head & Neck imaging within the Adults’ Radiology Department. This training post is intended for radiologists with training equivalent to a UK CCT who wish to develop subspecialist expertise; prior H&N experience is not essential.
The fellow will spend the majority of their time in Head & Neck imaging. In a standard 10 PA job plan, around 8–9 PAs will be in the subspecialty, 1 PA in general acute radiology and up to 1 SPA session for research or projects. The post is partly funded through reporting, aiming to develop confidence in independent subspecialty reporting over the year.
The successful candidate will join a team of 51 Consultant Radiologists providing general and specialist imaging to local and tertiary populations across three acute and two non-acute sites, including Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital. There may also be opportunities for limited paediatric H&N exposure and development of additional interests.
MFT is the regional hub for ENT and Maxillofacial services and supports multiple tertiary services including cochlear implants, ophthalmology, dental services, cancer MDTs, endocrinology and neurofibromatosis services. Imaging modalities include CT, MRI, radiography, ultrasound-guided biopsy and nuclear medicine for inpatient and outpatient care.
The fellowship is partly funded through reporting activity, with structured training and progressive sign-off to independently report and/or perform a range of Head & Neck examinations. Fellows gradually increase independent reporting throughout the year while retaining consultant supervision and access to second opinions, with the aim of achieving confident independent practice by the end of the post.
MFT is the regional Head & Neck cancer centre. The fellow will attend the weekly Central Sector H&N Cancer MDT, preparing and presenting cases under consultant supervision. Additional opportunities include monthly Endocrinology MDTs, twice-monthly Orbital MDTs, and optional remote attendance at the regional Skull Base MDT at Salford Royal.
The fellow contributes approximately 1 PA per week to the Adults’ Acute Radiology service, undertaking inpatient and emergency CT reporting alongside consultants and registrars. There is no on-call or out-of-hours commitment.
The post provides experience in complex diagnostic imaging across CT, MRI, ultrasound-guided biopsy and dental cone-beam CT, working closely with surgical, oncology and neuroscience teams, including The Christie Hospital and Salford Royal. Fellows present cases at benign and malignant MDTs with dedicated support and increasing autonomy.
Training is also provided in head and neck interventional procedures to at least FRCR Level 2 standards, including US guided FNA, core biopsy and aspiration/drainage procedures.
