BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of highway maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to help keep Scotland moving.

The South East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland to through the Scottish Borders. Trunk roads in the South East range from the major multi-lane motorways across the central belt to roads through villages in the borders.

We have vacancies for Highway Maintenance Operatives to join our existing operations team. The Highway Maintenance Operative will report to Operations Supervisor and Operations Manager and will be responsible to help keeping Scotland moving.

This is a full-time role with Standby Rota and Overtime available.



Responsibilities and Activities

The erection and removal of temporary signs and barriers (permanent signs and barriers).
Drainage works, excavation, pipe laying, kerb laying, scrub cutting.
Installation and fixing of temporary/permanent road furniture.
Operation of power tools, small plant and machinery, specifically landscaping equipment
Driving vehicles including those with simple attachments
Prepare written returns including fault report details.
Responsibility for the health and safety of the public, colleagues and yourself.
Participating in our winter response service on a standby rota basis.
Winter maintenance duties which include fitting gritter body and blade, driving gritter and spread salt by hand if required.
Please note: Due to the nature of this role, successful candidates must be able to reach the depot within 30 minutes of being called out. This is essential to ensure timely response to operational needs.



Knowledge, Skills and Experience

A Full UK Driving Licence is essential
LGV Class C Licence is essential
Previous Experience in Roadworks or similar construction environment is desirable
Willingness to undertake training and achieve competency across key aspects of the role
Solid understanding of Health & Safety Regulations and a Commitment to safe working practices
Ability to work in demanding outdoor conditions
Experience operating small plant machinery and equipment
Possession of relevant certifications in plant operation, traffic management, & Health & Safety is highly desirable.
