Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultation to join our Orthodontic department.

If successful you will be working in the outpatient clinic, undertaking specialist orthodontic treatment for patients who attend our department with complex orthodontic problems

This role consists of six four-hour Programmed Activity (PA’s) each week, split across Southend & Broomfield Hospitals. Your Programmed Activity will consist of clinical sessions and administrative work related to the patients being treated.

The appointee will work in the Orthodontic Departments of both hospitals, undertaking specialist orthodontic treatment, new patient clinics, review clinics and Orthognathic hypodontia MDTs. The appointee will assist the other consultant orthodontists to run and develop the Orthodontic Department in its present and future service provision.

The post will be split between Southend and Broomfield Hospitals, but the appointee will be an employee of Southend University Hospital and appraisal and other aspects of the management of the employment will be led by Southend University Hospital.

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.

At Broomfield Hospital the appointee will be responsible for running the clinical service with their Orthodontic consultant colleague, which will include liaising with colleagues and managers to ensure the smooth running of the service. They will be jointly responsible for day-to-day clinical governance issues in this department. It is expected that the appointee will develop this service to improve the service to local patients and primary care providers. The appointee will be accountable to the Orthodontic Clinical Lead (currently Mr Spencer Nute) and the Divisional managers at Southend University Hospital and Broomfield Hospital.

Attending promptly to administrative matters and correspondence relating to any or all the above, including data collection and audit. This will involve frequently liaising effectively with colleagues in secondary care as well as referring primary care general and specialist practitioner colleagues. The departments prides themselves on good relationships with local primary care providers and the successful applicant is expected to uphold the values and protocols we follow. Working across both hospitals will ensure that the appointee has mentorship from 3 experienced consultant orthodontist colleagues plus Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery consultant colleagues and will therefore understand the level of service that we expect to provide.

Supervision and teaching of the specialty registrars in conjunction with the other consultant orthodontists. Specialty training is a major part of our department’s remit, and we have an excellent reputation for the quality of our clinical training. Our unit is highly regarded by the East of England Training Programme Director and the dental teaching hospital our specialty trainees link to at Barts and The London NHS Trust. The successful candidate is expected to participate actively and fully in all aspects of our department’s clinical specialty training and specialty trainee clinical supervision. This includes being a named Clinical Supervisor for all the trainees and potentially becoming Educational Supervisor for one or more trainees in time.
