Summary
the role will include: Cleaning, of animal accommodation. Providing food, water, exercise, socialisation and grooming for the animals. Performing health checks/prescribed treatments on all animals. Communicating with supporters/adopters and staff both verbally and by email. Completing all relevant animal paperwork and updating the database.
The Role:
Assist with the inspection and or treatment of animals by a Veterinary Surgeon, or other authorised person at the Centre
Carry out checks on animals, including the taking of temperature and inspection of eyes, ears, nose and throat for signs of infection or abnormality, reporting any abnormalities to the manager or supervisor at the Centre
Prepare and provide food and water for all animals in the establishment
Clean, disinfect and maintain to a standard of cleanliness set by the management the animal accommodation, isolation and exercise areas; the food preparation, laundry, storage, the reception, offices, stores, staff facilities, toilets and outside areas
Ensure building/exercise areas are secure at all times
Attend to the needs of the individuals, including exercise, coat care/grooming, administration of first aid treatments
Routine animal behaviour monitoring/assessment prior to rehoming
Attend to the needs of the client/customer/general public, face to face or via the telephone
Liaise with colleagues in other departments/RSPCA Branch workers/voluntary helpers
Operation of cash register and the safe receipt of money
Maintaining daily cash records as directed
Maintain/monitor the daily animal records and general administrative duties. Complete documentation relating to the acceptance and release of animals
To undertake other duties as required by the Supervisor/Animal Centre Manager
Desired skills and Qualities
Experience working with domestic animals is essential
Good animal handling skills
The successful applicant will have good communication skills and enjoy working as part of a team
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel etc. is essential
Hardworking
Ability to multitask and prioritise
Work on your own initiative
Desired qualifications
Maths and English GCSEs or equivalent are desirable but not essential
Applicants must not already hold a level 2 or higher qualification in Animal Care
Future prospects
On completion of their Apprenticeship there may be opportunities for the Apprentice to progress to part time animal care assistant/ fulltime animal care assistant/supervisor/manager/inspector
Training
Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment.
The applicant will be working towards a Level 2 Animal Care & Welfare Apprenticeship Standard.
The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship.
The apprentice will work towards an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship
Things to consider
Active all day, long walks with the animals, can get very mucky and covered in all sorts, out in all weathers.

The apprentice will be working to build a portfolio of evidence and will be required to pass a knowledge test and an End Point Assessment (EPA) to complete the apprenticeship.
