Ready to turn digital concepts into physical prototypes?
If you are an aspiring engineer with a passion for electronics and software, this is your chance to launch your career at the heart of UK manufacturing innovation. Join the AMRC Design & Prototyping Group (DPG) and help us build cutting-edge solutions for high-profile industrial partners.
The Role: From Concept to Creation
As an Assistant Project Engineer, you won't just be watching from the sidelines. You will be an integral part of a diverse team of designers and software experts, turning original ideas into functional demonstrators. During this 12-month placement, you will:
● Build Digital Solutions: Develop proof-of-concept prototypes using a mix of hardware and software.
● Code & Create: Write and document applications in languages like Python, C++, or C, using professional tools like Git for version control.
● Get Hands-On: Move between virtual prototyping and physical testing to see your designs in action.
● Grow with Mentorship: Work directly under a Senior Engineer from our Digital Design team, gaining the skills and confidence to tackle complex engineering challenges.
Who You Are
We are looking for an enthusiastic, curious mind who loves to solve problems. You are the ideal candidate if you have:
● Foundation Knowledge: Experience or a strong interest in electronics engineering (PCBs, sensors) or software development (C, C++, Python, MATLAB).
● A Creative Edge: You enjoy developing original approaches to design problems and aren't afraid to try new techniques.
● Adaptability: You can manage your own workload and are excited to learn "on the job."
● Great Communication: You can share your ideas clearly with teammates and project partners alike.
Even if you don’t meet every single criteria, we value your unique background and encourage you to apply if you have the drive to learn!
What We Offer
The University of Sheffield is a remarkable place to work. Our people are at the heart of everything we do. Their diverse backgrounds, abilities, and beliefs make Sheffield a world-class university.

● A generous pension scheme and a commitment to your ongoing personal development and mentoring.
● Access to state-of-the-art equipment in our Design, Prototyping and Testing Centre (DPTC).
