Summary
Environment and Sustainability Advisor
Location: Warwick (and other Telent offices if needed) and Site travel - Agile Working
Job Type: Full time, Permanent
Job Reference: 2160
Telent is currently seeking an Environment and Sustainability Advisor to join our team. This is a specialist, site‑focused advisory role, supporting our Rail and Asset Management divisions to reduce carbon emissions, meet legal and ISO: 14001 and PAS:2080 requirements, and exceed our customers' sustainability expectations.
The Role:
You will work on live projects, working directly with site teams and customers, rather than a purely corporate, desk‑based or reporting‑only sustainability role.
The ideal candidate will have experience in rail and/or rail asset management, ideally holding a valid PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification. However, candidates from closely aligned industries such as construction, utilities, telecoms, nuclear, transport or traffic management will also be welcomed, where they bring strong, transferable site‑level environmental experience. PTS training and Rail exposure can be provided where required.
This position follows an agile working model, with a requirement to attend a Telent office (Warwick and other Telent offices as needed) at least 1-2 days per month. The role also involves regular travel to client and operational sites across the UK, so a full UK driving licence and flexibility to travel is essential.
At Telent, sustainability is more than a strategy - it is delivered on the ground. The Environmental & Sustainability Advisor will be at the forefront of turning environmental requirements into practical site‑level action, supporting the safe and compliant delivery of critical infrastructure works.
What you'll do:
- Act as a trusted advisor, providing practical environmental and sustainability guidance to project managers, engineers and site teams on live operational sites.
- Attend sites regularly to carry out environmental inspections, identify risks and support delivery teams with proportionate, workable solutions.
- Lead environmental risk management and assurance activities, including site‑based audits, inspections and corrective actions.
- Act as the first point of contact for site teams and customers on environmental issues arising during works.
- Respond to operational environmental matters such as protected species discoveries (e.g. bats, badgers), spills, waste issues and non‑conformances, including engagement with customers and regulators where required.
- Develop, implement and review site‑level Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), method statements and controls aligned with ISO 14001 and project requirements.
- Drive carbon performance improvement through site‑informed data collection, observations and reporting, rather than purely corporate‑level metrics.
- Safeguard the business by managing environmental risks, ensuring legal compliance and ISO 14001 alignment across live projects.
- Collaborate with bid, design and operational teams to embed sustainability measures throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support environmental governance activities including permits, incidents, investigations and regulatory interactions.
Who you are:
You are an experienced Environmental or Sustainability professional who thrives in fast‑paced, operational environments, ideally within Rail, Construction, Utilities, Telecoms, Nuclear, Transport or similar infrastructure‑led industries.
You are comfortable working on a site / onsite, making confident judgements based on what you see in front of you, and providing clear, pragmatic advice to support safe and compliant delivery - not just producing reports from a desk.
Key requirements:
- Professional environmental qualification (minimum PIEMA or equivalent).
- Auditor certified or demonstrable auditing / inspection experience.
- Hands‑on environmental experience on live operational sites within infrastructure or construction‑led environments.
- Proven experience advising on environmental and sustainability best practices in site‑based operational settings (not purely corporate or desk‑based roles).
- Experience developing and implementing site‑level Environmental Management Plans and controls.
- Confidence dealing directly with site teams, project managers and customers on environmental risks and incidents.
- Strong track record in delivering measurable environmental and sustainability improvements across infrastructure projects.
- Skilled in managing technical and operational challenges within live delivery environments.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the UK as required.
