Summary

The Band 6 Nurse on a Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) unit provides clinical leadership and specialist nursing care to patients receiving cancer treatments. They are responsible for the safe assessment, administration, and monitoring of SACT and supportive therapies, ensuring compliance with national and local protocols. Key responsibilities include: Clinical assessment of patients prior to treatment, including review of blood results and toxicity assessments Safe administration of SACT and supportive treatments, including blood products Management of central venous access devices (PICC/PORT), cannulation, venepuncture, and pump disconnections Early recognition and management of oncological emergencies and acutely unwell patients Supervision, support, and mentorship of junior staff and students Coordination of patient flow, chair capacity, and workload management Ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to governance, safety, and chemotherapy policies Patient education regarding treatment, side effects, and when to seek urgent care Participation in audits, incident reviews, and service improvement initiatives The role combines advanced clinical skills with leadership, decision-making, and responsibility for maintaining high standards of patient safety and care delivery within the SACT service.
