School Cleaner
To support the day to day operation of our school, we currently have a vacancy for a cleaner to help maintain a welcoming and safe environment for our children and staff.
Hours: Full time 26 days annual leave plus bank holidays 12.5 hours/week Times: Monday to Friday, 3:15 PM - 5:45 PM Pay: £9936 per annum
Job Description
Skills and Attributes: 1. Ability to work as part of a team. 2. Knowledge and understanding of health and safety responsibilities. 3. Ability to carry out designated tasks independently or under supervision. 4. Ability to follow instructions. 5. Flexibility to undertake any other duties commensurate with the general level of responsibility of the role.
Main Activities: To clean, wash, sweep, vacuum, empty litter bins, polish, and dust designated areas, including fixtures and fittings, using powered equipment and specialist cleaning products where appropriate. Daily Duties: In designated rooms or corridors (including staffroom, kitchen, and medical areas): • Sweep all floors • Mop all floors • Vacuum carpets and mats • Empty all bins • Damp wipe tables, desks, and work surfaces (ensuring chairs are placed down to clean surfaces) • Refill hand towels and tissues and check soap dispensers • Clean toilet pans and seats • Clean sinks and taps • Wipe walls, tiles, and partitions • Refill toilet paper dispensers
In the hall: • Sweep floors • Mop floors
Weekly Duties: • Damp wipe mirrors and internal glass • Dust and/or damp wipe cupboard tops, shelving, and ledges • Wipe (using anti-static cloth) any switched-off electronic equipment • Deep clean toilet pans School Holiday Cleaning (Half-Term): In designated rooms and corridors (including staffroom, kitchen, and medical areas): • Sweep and mop all floors • Vacuum carpets and mats • Clean all tables and work surfaces • Deep clean sinks and wash paper towel holders • Dust and polish all surfaces • Clean internal glass and mirrors • Remove marks from walls, doors, doorframes, and radiators • Damp wipe radiators to remove dust • High-level dusting/damp wiping of window and door frames, light fittings, and cornices
In toilets: • High-level dusting of window sills, cisterns, light fittings, and cornices • Wash down walls, doors, partitions, and tiles • Deep clean sinks, toilet pans, and seats • Clean mirrors and internal glass • Sweep and mop floors In the hall: • Sweep and mop floors • Vacuum mats • Move equipment and clean behind benches, chairs, and apparatus in line with health and safety procedures • Dust and polish all surfaces • Clean internal glass • Remove marks from walls, doors, doorframes, and vents • Damp wipe vents • High-level dusting/damp wiping of frames, fittings, cornices, and fascia boards
End of Term Cleaning: In addition to half-term duties: • Dust and vacuum vertical blinds • Moveable furniture to be pulled out and cleaned behind (vacuum and wipe) • Scrub all rooms and hall areas
End of Year Cleaning: In addition to end of term duties: • Wash all plastic chairs • Vacuum fabric chairs • Shampoo clean all carpets (all rooms)
Health and Safety Responsibilities: To maintain safe working practices, you are required to: • Use only authorised cleaning materials and follow correct dilution rates • Never mix chemicals • Use separate cloths for toilets and sinks compared to other surfaces • Use separate mop and bucket systems for toilets and other floor areas • Use all provided safety equipment, including gloves • Use wet floor signage when appropriate • Report any faults in electrical equipment to the Site Manager and do not use faulty equipment • Follow safe manual handling procedures when lifting or moving items or equipment General Responsibilities: • Undertake training and development as required • Support the training and development of colleagues where appropriate • Take responsibility for your own health and safety and that of others

Essential Criteria: • Good standard of general cleanliness with strong attention to detail • Ability to work independently and use initiative • Reliable, punctual, and trustworthy • Good time management skills and ability to complete tasks within set timeframes • Understanding of basic health and safety requirements, including safe use of cleaning equipment and chemicals • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to school policies and procedures • Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and hygienic environment for pupils and staff • Good communication skills
Desirable Criteria: • Previous cleaning experience, ideally within a school or similar environment • Knowledge of COSHH regulations • Experience using a range of cleaning equipment and machinery (e.g. floor polishers, vacuum cleaners) • Awareness of safeguarding responsibilities within a school setting
Personal Qualities: • Positive and proactive attitude • Flexible and willing to support the wider team when required • Respectful and professional manner • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
