Summary

A Vacancy at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.


The orthopaedic department sits within the Surgical and Women’s Health (SWNS) division. This is a busy DGH with approximately 2000 inpatient episodes per year made up of 1500 elective & 600 non elective. There are 21,000 new and follow up outpatient appointments per year.

There are 3 Day Surgery Theatres and these allow more specialist upper limb surgery to be done as day cases. There are 2 laminar air flow theatres where the majority of the orthopaedic operations are performed. The candidate is also expected to make use of the minor operating suite for local anaesthetic cases. The job also has assigned operating list at BHOC (Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre) as part of joint working within the ICS.

The trust has recently completed the construction of 2 further dedicated laminar flow capable theatres and a dedicated 12 bed elective ward with the expectation of orthopaedic utilisation within Q2/ Q3 of 2026.

There is currently a 1:10 On call rota where surgeons perform on call commitments within a TSOW Trauma Surgeon of the Week Model. The frequency is expected to drop within the next 12 months as further colleagues are recruited as planned expansion.


There will be an average of 8 PAs of direct clinical care (including out of hours and on call work), and 2 PAs allocated for supporting professional activities (audit, admin, teaching and CPD). As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with and support other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality, safe health care to patients.Applications are invited from suitably qualified surgeons for the post of Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics. The post will be based at Homerton University Hospital with cross site working at the SLG Centre in Stratford and the BHOC Centre in Newham.The post- holder will have the following core responsibilities:

This post will work with other orthopaedic colleagues and be part of the trauma and orthopaedic team at the Homerton Hospital. This post is part of the strategic plan to build on the success of our sports medicine and orthopaedic unit.

Expertise is required within both Trauma and Elective Orthopaedic surgery, and this will include training in all aspects of hand and wrist surgery.
