Summary
What skills and experience we're looking for
Bournemouth School is an 11–18 selective grammar school for boys, with a co-educational sixth form. Established in 1901 and converted to academy status in 2011, the school serves Bournemouth and the surrounding areas. In February 2024, Bournemouth School was judged “Outstanding” – a testament to the quality of teaching, leadership, and the success of our students.
The successful applicant will be joining the School at an exciting time. The current headteacher is retiring at the end of December after 17 years in post, with his place being taken by one of the current Deputy Headteachers, Mrs Katie Ateaque. This position is being advertised from September to build capacity within the team and secure a smooth and orderly transition in the School’s Leadership. The specific responsibilities will be decided upon appointment.
No matter what the specific responsibilities, the person appointed will be an excellent teacher and communicator, able to inspire confidence in all stakeholders, and motivate learners to achieve the highest outcomes.
You will be a very effective leader who is able to think strategically and effect improvement. You will work alongside dedicated staff, motivated students, and a supportive board of trustees, all committed to sustaining excellence and inclusion. Your leadership will be instrumental in maintaining the school’s status as a beacon of excellence, ensuring that our students continue to flourish and excel in all aspects of their school life.
The Assistant Headteacher will support the strategic leadership and operational management of Bournemouth School. The postholder will lead designated whole-school priorities, contribute to school improvement, and ensure high standards of teaching, learning, behaviour and student achievement.
The Assistant Headteacher will work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team and contribute to the day-to-day leadership of the school, modelling excellent practice and supporting the school’s ethos of academic excellence and personal development.
What the school offers its staff
Bournemouth School is a fantastic place to work. The school’s atmosphere is calm and purposeful, and our success is built upon the foundations of hard work, discipline, smart appearance, and, most importantly, respect.
• A welcoming staff and commitment from SLT and Trustees to promote and support staff wellbeing.
• Employee Assistance Programme offering a wide range of support and benefits.
• Able, motivated and polite students who are a privilege to teach.
• Extensive CPD programme (for ECTs and experienced staff) to support individual professional development.
• Teacher pension scheme.
