Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL) Cellular Pathology Department.

The post holders’ primary base will be the Pathology Department at University Hospital, Lewisham. However, there will be occasions when there will be a requirement to attend any Trust site in the performance of duties within this job description and the post will be rostered between all sections of the Histology Department.
Duties will include complex testing and investigation of clinical samples at a level appropriate to the qualifications and training of an experienced Biomedical Scientist. The post-holder will be expected to take day to day technical charge of a section of the laboratory and to deputise for the Histology Operational Lead as required.
Help set up and maintain the Histology Department’s Document Control System, working closely with the Quality Manager and quality leads to keep documents organised and compliant.The post holder will ensure that their own participation in the CPD scheme is maximised and will have a personal responsibility to ensure retention of their own state registration.
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership was formed in May 2021. Between 2021 and 2024 the Partnership undertook a complex transformation programme to establish a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS).
The Partnership has a main hub laboratory at the Royal London Hospital and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at the six other hospital sites served by the Partnership.
The Partnership has three operational divisions:
• Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry
• Microbiology and Virology
• Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics
The 2024/25 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £121m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 860 WTE.
