About the Role
Bhuku Ltd is seeking a dedicated and resilient Life Skills Tutor to deliver a high-impact personal development and employability programme at HMP Chelmsford.
This role focuses on supporting prisoners who are not engaging in the prison regime or unable to attend education, helping them develop the skills, confidence and behaviours needed for successful reintegration into society.
You will work closely with learners on a 1:1 and small group basis, delivering flexible, wing-based and in-cell learning tailored to individual needs.
What You’ll Be Delivering
You will deliver a structured Life Skills and Personal Development programme, supporting learners to develop:
Resilience and emotional awareness
Self-reflection and positive thinking
Motivation and goal setting
Confidence and self-esteem
Communication and teamwork
Decision making and problem solving
Time management
Financial literacy (budgeting, managing debt, understanding bills)
Healthy living and wellbeing
You will also deliver enterprise and employability skills, including:
Preparing for work and self-employment
Understanding legal restrictions and responsibilities (including MAPPA awareness where required)
Developing practical life skills for release
The programme is non-accredited but outcome-focused, with clear learner targets and measurable progress.
How You’ll Deliver
Deliver sessions Tuesday to Thursday (AM & PM)
Work with a rolling caseload of up to 20 learners
Provide a mix of:
Face-to-face support
In-cell learning materials
Small group sessions
Create and deliver engaging learning resources and activities
Track progress through Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
Adapt delivery for learners with neurodiversity, low literacy and complex needs
Delivery will take place on wings and across different areas of the prison, requiring flexibility and adaptability.
Collaboration
You will work closely with:
Learning & Skills Manager
CIAG (Careers Information, Advice & Guidance) teams
Prison officers and wing staff
Education providers
Neurodiversity and support teams
You will also support recruitment and promotion of the programme, including creating engaging materials.

We are looking for someone who is:
Passionate about supporting individuals with complex needs
Confident working in a challenging but rewarding environment
Skilled at engaging learners who are disengaged or low in confidence
Able to deliver flexible, learner-centred sessions
Organised and able to manage multiple learners and progress tracking
Essential Requirements
Experience delivering life skills, employability or personal development programmes
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work within prison security and safeguarding procedures
Willingness to complete full prison vetting and induction
Ability to work independently across prison wings
Desirable
Experience working in a custodial or secure environment
Teaching, training or coaching qualification
Experience supporting neurodiverse learners or those with additional needs
Understanding of rehabilitation and resettlement pathways
