Summary


The role of the Emergency Department (ED) Navigator is to identify and engage with patients aged 10 to 25 years, who attend the Emergency Department at Royal Blackburn Hospital with injuries consistent with involvement in violence. The aim of the role is to intervene in a non-judgemental way, as close to the time of the incident as possible. The role is about prevention and using the knowledge we have in public health and trauma informed approaches to understand why people commit violence, helping them by building trusted relationships to navigate away from violence, towards a more positive lifestyle.



The scope of the post will include the development of professional relationships with children and young people and other agencies within the community i.e. family support workers, Social Workers, school nurses, Teachers, Police, Champions to improve outcomes for victims of violence. The post holder will need to be a motivated and dynamic practitioner with experience of working with safeguarding issues. The ability to work as part of a team are essential requirements, as is the ability to work a varying shift pattern to cover the service 7 days a week and during unsociable hours.







Main duties of the job

· Work alongside the Emergency Department to identify patients who meet the ED Navigator programme criteria.

· Establish a professional relationship with identified patients in a non-judgemental way, within a reachable, teachable moment.

· Undertake an assessment of the patient’s needs utilising a trauma informed approach to formulate a care plan which is delivered under the supervision of the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children.

· Act as an advocate for patients in identifying and supporting them to gain access to suitable on-going support to meet identified needs.

· Seek support and advice from the wider Emergency Department, Safeguarding Team and/or line manager when needed in complex situations.

· Contribute to the monitoring and review of the service under the supervision of the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children as per the requirements of the ED Navigator Service Grant Agreement.

· To cover a 7 day per week service, working flexibly including un-sociable hours in line with service demands.

• Attend and contribute to meetings in relation to the ED Navigator service as required.
• Establish clear lines of communication between other agencies i.e Police, Children’s Social Care, Champions, 0-19 Universal Service in supporting and referring identified patients onto on-going services within the community.
• Utilise secure information recording systems and processes, to ensure patient information is recorded accurately and in line with Information Governance Policies and Procedures.
• Maintain own continuing professional development in accordance with the Trusts mandatory core skills and role specific training requirements.
• Undertake further training as required to enhance the service or own development needs as identified within the appraisal process or 1:1’s.
• Engage in clinical and safeguarding supervision as per policy.
• Maintain up to date records and electronic diary in accordance with ELHT policies and procedures
• Maintain a database that will collect and record information as appropriate for the purpose of statistical data collection.
• Plan and prioritise own project/workload.
• Act in accordance with all organisational policies and procedures and within expected values and behaviours.
• Exercise personal responsibility and work independently within defined parameters of practice, taking the initiative in a variety of situations and performing a range of care skills consistent with the role, responsibilities and professional values of being an ED Navigator
