Summary
Training Supervision, support, and training will be provided as required and as appropriate. You will not be asked to undertake procedures for which you have not had the necessary training. Responsibilities You are accountable for your clinical work, and you will seek guidance from the GP as necessary when clinically appropriate. Nurses work as part of the Primary Health Care Team, and your role and responsibilities require an active awareness of the need to co-ordinate your work with others in the team. You will work within your level of competence in accordance with the UKCC code of conduct. Clinical Duties in respect of patients who have self-referred or been referred by a GP Chronic disease management clinics Childhood immunisation Measuring and recording blood sugar levels Recognising mild childhood illnesses liaising with GPs Suture removal Administering injections as and when recommended by the doctors e.g. depot Teaching inhaler technique Taking and recording blood pressures Venepuncture (if trained to do so) Other procedures from time to time eg ECG recording, Spirometry Assisting in procedures Assisting with minor surgery procedures if required. Assisting with family planning procedures if required. Preventative health and chronic disease management Developing, managing & delivering screening and health promotion services including the development of protocols in conjunction with other clinical staff Provide health screening, planned and opportunistically, to patients of all ages Chronic disease management programmes such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension and others Implement agreed standards of infection control in the practice in order to maintain a clinically safe environment Undertake new patient screening Undertake childhood immunisations Undertake cytological screening Routine injections including flu vaccinations Assessing the needs of the elderly (including over 75 check) Travel clinics (including vaccinations and safer sex clinic) Provide family planning services Giving advice on healthy living Teaching self-examination (breast and testicles) NHS Health Checks Organisation/Administration: Responsible for managing own surgeries and clinics Manage patient recall systems Developing protocols and guidelines in conjunction with other clinical and management staff and to follow agreed protocols and contribute to regular reviews of protocols Maintain accurate patient records. Maintain equipment and supplies and ensure correct storage of medical and surgical equipment, including vaccines. Working as part of the Primary Health Care Team: Working with a team and recognising the roles of different members of the Primary Health Care Team and being flexible Liaise with members of the wider Primary Health Care Team, including, for example, District nurses and Health Visitors regarding individual patient care Attending and taking an active part in practice staff meetings as required Participating in the administrative and professional duties of the Practice team Assist with teaching medical students To supervise, assist and teach and develop the role of HCA in liaison with other nurses/doctors Understand and apply safeguarding issues that support the identification of vulnerable and abused children and adults, and be aware of statutory health procedures and local guidance Advice and Referrals Giving advice in person or in liaison with GPs (Nurse Practitioner) by phone or first aid, common minor ailments/injuries and other subjects within agreed common procedures. Making appropriate referrals to other health and social service professionals. Giving advice on source of information and help outside the Primary Health Care Team. Other: Undertake any other nursing task that may be reasonably be expected by the partners/manager, in accordance with grade. Be aware of, and act in accordance with, responsibilities under current Health and Safety regulations. Attend professional updating provided locally, for example by the Practice Nurse Forum Able to use computer in clinical work. Maintain an up to date knowledge of clinical issues in pertinent areas of practice. Ad-hoc duties as and when required, in consultation with yourself Professional Development Participating in appraisal Maintaining professional development by attending courses and study days as arranged with the GPs and appropriate for the practice.
