1. Job Summary
The postholder will work as a Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine / General Internal Medicine, providing senior clinical leadership within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and inpatient medical wards. The role supports safe, timely assessment and management of acutely unwell medical patients, ensuring high‑quality care aligned with NHS clinical standards.

The consultant will participate in the acute take, lead multidisciplinary teams, supervise junior doctors, and contribute to service improvement within the Trust.

2. Key Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
Lead the acute medical take, including rapid assessment, diagnosis, and management of emergency medical admissions.

Provide senior decision‑making within AMU, SDEC, and short‑stay units.

Conduct daily consultant ward rounds, ensuring timely review of all new admissions.

Deliver high‑quality care for patients with a broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions.

Ensure safe handover of care between teams and across shifts.

Support early discharge planning and patient flow across the hospital.

Provide specialist advice to ED, ICU, and other clinical teams as required.

Leadership & Teamwork
Provide visible consultant leadership within the acute medical service.

Work collaboratively with nurses, AHPs, pharmacists, physician associates, and advanced clinical practitioners.

Participate in MDT meetings and contribute to clinical governance activities.

Support Trust initiatives to improve patient safety, quality, and efficiency.

Teaching & Supervision
Supervise and mentor FY1/FY2, IMT, ACCS trainees, and medical students.

Provide bedside teaching, case-based discussions, and clinical guidance.

Contribute to appraisal and assessment processes (e.g., CBDs, Mini‑CEX, ACAT).

On‑Call Commitments
Participate in the Consultant Acute Medicine on‑call rota, including evenings and weekends, depending on Trust requirements.

Provide senior support for the hospital at night team when on call.

3. Person Specification
Essential
CCT in Acute Medicine / GIM (or within 6 months of completion).

MRCP (UK) Part 1 & 2.

Full GMC registration with licence to practise.

Broad experience in acute and general internal medicine.

Ability to lead the acute take and manage high‑acuity patients.

Excellent communication and team‑working skills.

Desirable
SCE in Acute Medicine.

Experience in SDEC / Ambulatory Care pathways.

Evidence of involvement in quality improvement, audit, or research.

Teaching qualification or experience in medical education.

4. Service Structure
The Acute Medicine department typically includes:

Acute Medical Unit (AMU)

Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)

Short Stay Medical Unit (SSMU)

Medical Assessment Unit (MAU)

The consultant team works closely with ED, ICU, specialty physicians, and community services to ensure seamless patient care.

5. Clinical Governance & Quality
The postholder is expected to:

Participate in clinical audit, morbidity & mortality meetings, and quality improvement projects.

Contribute to guideline development and service redesign.

Maintain CPD in line with GMC and Royal College requirements.

6. Work Schedule (Example)
08:00–17:00: AMU/SDEC consultant cover

Daily ward rounds of new and existing patients

Hot clinic or SDEC sessions depending on rota

On‑call: 1:8 to 1:12 (varies by Trust)

7. Additional Responsibilities
Support Trust initiatives such as:

Sepsis pathway

Acute frailty pathway

Early discharge and flow improvement

National audits (e.g., SSNAP, NCEPOD)

Engage in mandatory training and appraisal.

8. Duration & Terms
Locum Consultant via agency

Duration: Variable (typically 3–12 months)

Hours: Full‑time or part‑time depending on Trust needs

Pay: Agency locum consultant rates (Trust‑dependent)
