Summary
We invite applicants to submit an application for the role of a Consultant Anaesthetist (with an Interest in Critical Care). This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs). The post will be a permanent contract to support the provision of anesthetic and critical care services at The Christie.This post would be ideal for consultants with a CCT in Anesthesia, who are able to demonstrate an active interest in Intensive Care Medicine. Role PurposeTo contribute to the provision of consultant-led anesthesia and critical care services, supporting a range of oncological specialties held at The Christie. The post holder will do sessions in anaesthesia for oncological surgery and radiotherapy. They will also be expected to provide on-call cover for the oncological critical care unit (OCCU). The OCCU is an 8-bedded critical care unit that provides Level 2 and Level 3 support for patients under the care of oncology, haematology, and those undergoing major general surgery. There may be opportunities to support daytime critical care in the future. As an overview of the 10 PA job plan; there is a split of 7.5 programmed activities (PA) for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 PA for Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA). The on-call commitment is 1:8 and is solely for critical care. There is ongoing work to reduce the on-call commitment to a 1:10. There is a separate theatre on-call rota for emergency surgery. On appointment, the successful candidate will review and agree a job plan with the Joint Clinical Directors for Anesthesia and Critical Care, in collaboration with the Directorate Operations Manager and Service Manager for the department. A Consultants individual needs and specialist interests are supported and encouraged, whilst also ensuring our services are fully supported. The department of Anesthesia & Critical Care is dynamic and rapidly expanding which offers further opportunities for the successful candidate to develop in the future.The department has a rolling rota developed from the agreed job plans of all consultants. Individual job plans reflect this and are reviewed annually, in keeping with current trust policy.The Department of Anesthesia, Acute & Chronic Pain and Critical Care resides within a Directorate of Anesthesia, Theatres & Surgery (ATS) which is a part of a Division of Clinical Support & Specialist Surgery (CSSS) along with Radiology, Laboratory and Support Services. The role will be responsible for: Provision of anaesthesia for patients undergoing oncological surgery, radiotherapy +/- support for radiology Out of hours critical care support for the Oncological Critical Care Unit and wider hospital This timetable is indicative Job Plan PA Summary Total PAs Direct Clinical Care (DCC) 7.5 Elective Theatre Lists (averaged weekly) 5.3 Critical Care On-Call Cover (averaged weekly) 2.2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) (including 1.5 core SPA) 2.5 Supervision role (minimum 0.25 must be allocated) 0.25 Total Programmed Activities (PAs) 10 On call Commitments This role requires participation in an on-call commitment for the oncological critical care. This is currently a 1:8 rota and attracts a 2.2 PA allocation and 5% on-call supplement. There is a separate theatre on-call rota for emergency surgery. There is a plan to move towards decreasing the on-call commitment to a 1:10 rota, with a 3% on-call supplement. Please see JD-PS attached for further details.
