Summary


A vacancy has arisen for a Portering Chargehand post to work within the Portering Service and join a dedicated team of staff.

The role involves assisting with the supervision of the day-to-day operation of Portering, Waste & Linen Services, ensuring quality services are delivered in compliance with relevant service specification and key performance indicators.

Ensure the continuous delivery of services and respond to service failures in a timely manner.

To act as a key contact for all daily operational issues, concerns and service failures, responding to and resolving such issues in a professional and timely manner.

The post holder will be part of the Portering Operational Management Team and provide a wide range of Portering duties generally created by the demands of the hospital, which involves the movement of patients and items to provide the best possible service.

The role of the Portering Chargehand is to ensure the smooth running of the department and the supervision/safety of the staff members. To provide guidance and motivation to staff and to ensure that Portering targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) are met.

We are a 24 hour service therefore flexibility is an important component of the post.

To routinely monitor all staff attendance and timekeeping, follow up any initial inadequacies. Escalate any concerns to managers for further action.

To demonstrate and provide ongoing leadership and supervision of a range of Portering tasks.

Effectively communicating any necessary information to managers, colleagues and peers both verbally and in writing (including Trust / team brief).

Demonstrate good communication skills at all times when dealing with medical staff, patients and members of the public who can occasionally demonstrate challenging behaviours.

Provide support and assistance to Management in the provision of required mandatory training, to ensure staff complete all required mandatory training.

Ensure charge hand role specific training remains current and up to date. This will include Moving and handling facilitator and medical gas facilitator training

Ensure all staff are fully proficient and competent in required tasks and duties. Bring to manager’s attention any additional training needs. Ensure all completed training records are signed off.

Complete weekly/daily staff rota for the allocation of duties for all departments and rostered staff. Provide solutions to managers for any staffing shortfalls.

Check weekly/monthly, rotas, and timesheets for accuracy ready for Management authorisation.

The monitoring and provision of management information for KPI reporting requirements including, planet FM, and other Portering management information, for month end deadlines.

To carry out all General Porter activities as and when required

Ability to prioritise and work on own initiative. Ward staff, duty matron or on call manager are available for instruction and/or advice as necessary out of hours.

Adapt to changes in technology that support methods of receipt of tasks (EPR) and assist in distribution of tasks.

To assist colleagues in departments when service requirements are greater than staffing levels in place, this will also enable scheduled breaks to be taken.
