Summary
Stroke medicine is a hyperacute speciality. The timetable is necessarily flexible and flexibility would be expected of any successful appointee. The current rota includes time off in lieu for working weekends. Expected weekday working hours are 8am to 5pm. The ward sessions are varied and may include hyperacute work at the front door (we receive around 110 acute stroke calls per month), thrombectomy calls, ward rounds, regular MDTs and daily board rounds. The stroke unit has 30 beds (8 monitored) and we care for any stroke patients outlying our bed base where stroke is the primary issue (generally another 5 beds). The stroke team is supported by dedicated stroke nurse specialists and a therapy team including clinical psychology. Most patients will be discharged direct from the RSCH stroke unit, but around 10-15% are transferred to SRC at Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath for complex rehabilitation.
