Summary
About the role
This role supports the provision of palliative care to children, young people and families living with a life limited condition. Palliative care includes the provision of respite breaks enabling children opportunities to have fun, make memories ‘adding life to shortened years’. You will provide high quality holistic, family centred and compassionate care whilst meeting the complex clinical needs of the children in our care. The hospice delivers end of life care to a small number of children working with specialist teams providing training and advice to manage children’s symptoms effectively. You will work as part of a large team comprising of clinical staff, activities coordinators and the Child and Family Support Team.
Essential criteria
- Participate in the delivery of high quality care to children and young people who receive respite and end of life care at the hospice.
- Contribute to the ongoing assessment of children and young people, providing and monitoring care under the supervision of the nursing team.
- Participate in the training and development opportunities and frameworks provided by the hospice education team.
- Report changes in the child or young person’s symptoms and conditions and implement changes in care under supervision of the nursing team.
- Work within your scope of practice and clinical competence, asking for help from the nursing team when appropriate.
- Advocate for the child and young person and their families, supporting and promoting decisions, choices and best interests.
- Work as part of a team, providing support and supervision to students and junior members of staff.
- Working with support provide end of life care to children or young people staying at the hospice.
- Contribute to the assessment of children who are end of life ensuring symptoms are controlled, liaising with the specialist palliative care teams as required.
- Ensure exemplary communication skills and participate in the MDT planning of children’s care.
- Maintain accurate contemporaneous patients’ records as per hospice policy.
