Summary
The colposcopy nurse specialist is an advanced practice nurse responsible for assessing and managing patients referred with abnormal cervical screening teat results. The role involves performing cystoscopy examinations, identifying cervical abnormalities and taking biopsies when required. The nurse specialist provides patient education emotional support and clear expectations of procedures and results. They work closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure timely diagnosis and management, helping to prevent the development of cervical cancer. The role also includes maintaining clinical standards , documentation and contributing to quality improvement within the service.
Clinical duties assess patients referred after abnormal cervical screening results.
Perform colposcopy examinations to evaluate the cervix for abnormalities
Identify and document abnormal cervical changes or lesions
Take cervical biopsies for histological examination
Carry out or assist with treatment procedures such as loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LLETZ) when indicated
Provide clear explanations of procedures results and treatment options to patients
Offer emotional support and reassurance to patients who may feel anxious
Arrange and monitor follow up appointments and ongoing care
Work closely with the multidisciplinary team including gynaecologists and pathologists
Maintain accurate records follow national guidelines and support prevention of cervical cancer through early detection and treatment
