This 2-year post in Urology links international standard prostate cancer research with high-quality training in mid-grade urological surgery. The research will be supervised by the STAMPEDE trial’s Biomedical Imaging Group (BIG) under the aegis of Professor Noel Clarke. This research team is embedded within the GU Cancer Research/FASTMAN national centre of excellence for prostate cancer research at the Christie Hospital/CRUK Manchester Cancer Research Institute. The successful candidate will be expected to submit a research thesis at MD or PhD level to the University of Manchester based on their findings.
The post involves 3 days/week of protected research time as part of an internationally recognised clinical/academic team studying prostate cancer biology and treatment outcome. The proposed project for this post is integrally linked with the MRC STAMPEDE Trial based at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit, London. This combined collaborative group has an international track record in conducting large scale multidisciplinary research ranging from basic science to translational and clinical studies.
• Participate with the daily care of all urology in-patients including ward rounds, reviewing inpatient referrals and ongoing review of inpatients.
• Clinical supervision of foundation and core trainees on the team
• Outpatient clinics including new patient “one-stop” clinics, follow-up clinics, flexible cystoscopy clinics, haematuria clinics and prostate cancer diagnostics.
• Operating theatre – there is a significant operative commitment to the post. In addition to general urology lists, the successful appointee will be involved in complex major cases including: pelvic and retroperitoneal uro-oncology procedures; reconstructive and female urology procedures; minimally invasive surgery and complex endourology.
• Clinical sessions are as detailed in attached provisional job-plan, which provides ample opportunity for both operative and clinical training, exposing the appointee to a wide range of advanced subspecialist urology, in addition to general urology. The job-plan is for illustrative purposes only and would be reviewed depending on the training requirements of the successful applicant.
