Summary

This role is based in the UK and will be working on site in our UK based College.

BACKGROUND TO THE POST

The Construction workshop managers provide a high standard of technical and learning support in order to maintain a safe, well prepared and realistic working environment. This role will be essential to the effective delivery of study programmes to young people and qualifications to adults and high standards of health and safety.

SUBJECT AREAS COVERED

The workshop manager will be required to support sessions in a range of construction subject areas, and will need sound knowledge of a range of the construction industry. It would be desirable for an applicant to have a specific trade within construction. We would expect the technician to undertake First Aid training as part of their role and remain a designated First Aider within the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Health, Safety, and Compliance
• The workshop manager will act as the primary lead for workshop safety and will promote and maintain high standards of student behaviour and conduct.
• Conduct and record weekly inspections of all power tools, access equipment and stationary machinery
• Maintain COSHH records and ensure that dust extraction systems are functioning correctly to meet environmental health standards.
• A critical part of the role involves drafting and updating Risk Assessments and Safe
Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all equipment.
• Manage the cleaning and sanitisation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure it is stored correctly for student use.

2. Resource and Asset Management
• To prevent the loss of equipment, the workshop manager will implement and oversee a robust tool sign-out system.
• Be responsible for maintaining stock levels of essential materials such as timber, bricks, sand, and cement, and ensure that each workshop is fully equipped to prevent the constant movement of tools between areas.
• Coordinate with the department head to identify procurement needs and manage the
disposal of waste materials in line with college policy.

3. Maintenance and Technical Support - A key requirement of this role is the hands-on maintenance of hand tools and machinery:
• The regular sharpening of chisels, saws, and plane irons to ensure they are safe and
effective for student use.
• Perform basic repairs on broken equipment where possible and arrange for specialist external servicing when required.
• During practical sessions, assist teaching staff by preparing materials (e.g., cutting timber to size) and ensuring workbenches are clear of hazards.

4. Workshop Housekeeping
• Enforce and maintain a high standard of cleanliness across all construction areas (includes hoovering, clearing of off-cuts, and deep cleaning of workshops during half-term periods). By reducing dust buildup and organising storage racks, the workshop manager will ensure a professional, industry-standard environment that aligns with college expectations and health and safety requirements.

In order to support during busy exam periods, you may be asked to undertake exam invigilator duties. The College will provide training.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Attainments:

● Level 2 qualification in a construction related subject and a background in the industry.
● Must be highly organized, capable of working independently, and able to maintain accurate digital and paper-based records of safety checks and inventory.
● Previous experience of working within the vocational area.
● Awareness of Health and Safety regulations and experience of implementing H&S procedures.
● Willingness to undertake essential first aid and advanced first aid training - and maintain designated first aider status for the department
● Experience in using and maintaining a range of appropriate equipment.
