About the Employer
I am both the employer and mother to my young son who has been allocated 4 hours per week PA support via direct payment My son has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Learning Difficulties and is nonverbal. He wears nappies so will require personal care (changing) and maintaining his personal hygiene when out and about He has restricted speech, however, can communicate effectively in relation to his needs and wants. He uses eye contact, facial gestures and leads by hand (hand over hand) when he wants something, or wishes to go somewhere I am seeking a PA to provide my son with 1-1 support to access social activities within the community, encourage and develop his socialization and independence and provide us with a break from our caring role. My son loves the outdoors, he is extremely active and strong-willed, so he will require someone fit and full of energy to match. He loves messy play, plodding in mud and water, going to the beach, playing in parks and walking in the forest/ countryside. He is very active and requires lots of stimulation to burn off his energy. He likes the arcades, however, will wear his ear defenders to manage the noise. My son shows signs of anxiety and does not like going anywhere he is unfamiliar with; this can at times result in him refusing to go into a venue or will attempt to return to the car. He enjoys car rides, so someone with access to their own vehicle will be essential. My son requires one-to-one attention and close supervision due to his inability to understand risk to himself or others, he is known to self-harm when frustrated or upset, banging his head on the wall, hitting himself etc.:. He is unable to assess risk or understand consequences to his actions. My son’s behaviour can be challenging at times. The PA we are looking for will need to require skills of managing this with a calm approach and distraction techniques The successful personal assistant will support my son in accessing activities and experiences in the local community. You will support him in developing his social skills and help build his confidence. There is a requirement to prompt and support him with personal care at times if on an outing. The role is to befriend and offer companionship with a view to extending his support network It is desirable that the personal assistant will be expected to use their own car to transport to and from activities My son’s needs may vary from day to day, and your tasks may reflect this. You could be required to perform other duties as reasonably required.
