Locum Specialty Doctor in Psychiatry – Job Description (NHS Trust)
Grade: Specialty Doctor
Specialty: Psychiatry
Location: NHS Trust (specific site to be confirmed)
Start Date: ASAP Contract
Type: Locum (Full time or Part time)
Essential Requirement: Section 12 Approved
Key Responsibilities
• Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients within the designated service (e.g., Adult Inpatient, CMHT, Crisis Team, Old Age, Forensic, CAMHS depending on placement).
• Conduct risk assessments, formulation, and management plans in line with Trust and national guidelines.
• Participate actively in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, ward rounds, and case discussions.
• Review patients regularly and document clinical findings, treatment plans, and progress notes to a high standard.
• Work collaboratively with Consultants, Nursing staff, Psychologists, Social Workers, and other MDT members to ensure safe and effective patient care.
• Contribute to Mental Health Act assessments and related duties (Section 12 approval required).
• Support safe patient flow, including admissions, discharges, and crisis management.
• Participate in clinical governance, audits, service development, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Provide on call duties if required (rota dependent).
• Ensure compliance with NHS Trust policies, safeguarding procedures, and professional standards.
Essential Criteria
• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• Minimum 4 years post graduate experience, including at least 2 years in Psychiatry.
• Section 12 Approved under the Mental Health Act.
• Experience working within NHS mental health services.
• Strong skills in risk assessment, clinical decision making, and managing complex psychiatric presentations.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Desirable Criteria
• Experience in the specific subspecialty (e.g., Adult, CAMHS, Forensic, Old Age).
• Participation in teaching, supervision, or training of junior staff.
• Evidence of involvement in audits, QI projects, or research.
• MRCPsych exams completed or in progress.
Working Pattern
• Monday–Friday (9–5) or as per service needs.
• On call commitments may be included depending on the rota.
• Flexible working arrangements may be considered.
