Summary

We value a diverse workforce and welcome applications from all sections of the community wishing to join a workforce which embraces difference and welcomes everyone.

Everyone that joins us is required to undertake training and participate in incident response duties when the need to respond arises Having an incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and an active way to support communities and prevent harm to the environment. Further information on incident response can be found within your candidate pack.

We are looking for Assistant Project Managers to support delivery of exciting, innovative projects that reduce flooding risk to communities and enhance the environment. These roles sit in Project & Programme Management (PPD) managing low to medium risk projects and working alongside more senior colleagues gaining experience on major projects and packages of work.

As an Assistant Project Manager you will oversee and/or support project delivery from initial strategic planning through feasibility, detailed design, and into implementation, construction, and handover. Applying commercial acumen in project, contract, and risk management, you will establish effective relationships, facilitating collaborative and efficient ways of working. You will make project decisions informed by technical leads while following governance procedures, project assurance, and legislation. The ability to develop a resilient network of relationships with stakeholders such as statutory authorities, landowners, and communities to negotiate consents, approvals, and external funding is crucial. You will undertake occassional travel to project sites and meetings in other Agency/Partner offices.

Occassional overnight stays could be necessary.

The team

The PPD-Midlands hub is led by a Delivery Manager overseeing approximately 80 staff, supported by Programme Specialists, Programme Managers and Project Team Managers (PTM). Each PTM manages 8-15 Project Executives, Project Managers and Project Support Officers who manage the day-to-day delivery of projects within our flood & coastal erosion risk management programme using our framework suppliers. Other internal roles forming part of our teams include commercial, environmental, asset managers, financial, estates, and legal.

Experience/skills required

A degree (or equivalent) in an engineering, environmental or geography related discipline. Ideally working towards chartered membership of a professional body such as ICE, CIWEM or APM desired but not essential. Experience in a project and contract management environment, ideally within engineering, construction and/or flood & coastal risk management.

Desired experience in feasibility assessment, asset management, business case development, cost monitoring/forecasting, scope preparation, CDM, engineering design and/or construction. Strong interpersonal and influencing skills as relationship management of both internal and external stakeholders is an important aspect of the role. If you have transferable skills and enthusiasm for the role, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t have experience in flood risk management.
