The Regulatory Officer role sits within the International Waste Shipments – Compliance team, part of Waste Markets and Shipments, in the Environmental Markets and Enforcement arm within the EA. We are a national team with officers based across England, ensuring a consistent regulatory approach.
Our department ensures companies dispose of waste correctly by enforcing government regulations – “right waste, right place”. You will play a key role in planning, monitoring and delivering compliance and enforcement activity within your area of waste regulation, helping to drive a circular economy. As a Regulatory Officer, you will:
Guide, advise and support team members on policies and practices
Build and develop relationships with customers and stakeholders
Answer technical queries, interpret issues and develop solutions
Collate,analyse and use complex data to support evidence‑based decisions
Handle confidential and sensitive information in line with data protection requirements
Contribute to improving processes,procedures and operational instructions
Undertake audit and enforcement work, both field‑based and desk‑based
You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training, and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

We help to protect and improve the environment by regulating industry, ensuring compliance, and eliminating illegal activities. Key areas we regulate are: Packaging Waste, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, Batteries and International Waste Shipments.
Experience/skills required
· Excellent customer service skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external customers.
· Answer customer queries, convey technical information and solve problems.
· Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with innovation to embrace virtual communication technology.
· Organisation, time management and planning skills to deliver a varied workload with conflicting deadlines. Flexibility and adaptable to change.
· Competent use of Microsoft Office and Excel.
· Confidence in handing large quantities of data and sound attention to detail.
· Enthusiastic about working collaboratively with colleagues towards common goals.
· May be required to handle difficult/confrontational conversations.
· Excellent influencing skills, success in developing good relations in complex environments.
· Experience of producing accurate reports; collation, analysis and interpretation of data using Microsoft Office.
