Summary

This is a whole-time post, and the new appointee will join an enthusiastic endoscopy department. The department passed their JAG visit in March 2023 and is therefore accredited for 5 years (maximum allowed). It is a screening centre for the national bowel cancer screening programme. The appointee will be expected to devote the majority of his/her elective work to the endoscopic management of patients with GI problems, including diagnostic endoscopy, with the opportunity to train within the area of therapeutic endoscopy. The appointee will be competent in at least diagnostic gastroscopy, and ideally flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy. The appointee will be offered the opportunity to train in advanced endoscopy, which may be either in the field of ERCP or EUS. The alternative options include therapeutic upper GI interventions (such as dilation and stenting) or lower GI EMR. The appointee will gain significant experience in colonoscopy. The exact mix of endoscopy activity will depend on the previous experience and particular training needs of the appointee. It is anticipated that 5 service commitment sessions of endoscopy will be undertaken with 2-3 training lists. Some of the service commitment lists will be carried out at the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby. There are no fixed Ward duties and no general medical on call duties. The appointee will participate in the GI bleed on call rota (1:5) to gain experience of acute GI bleeds. The unit will be delivering endoscopy training days for Senior Clinical Fellows and Consultants from other Trusts. The appointee will gain managerial experience in helping to co-ordinate the organisational aspects of the courses. In addition, he/she will be encouraged to provide learning and training opportunities to undergraduates and Basic Medical Trainees. The department has several meetings each week, which the applicant could attend. These are as follows: Upper GI cancer MDT meeting 12.30pm Tuesday - Clinical Sciences Building Lower GI MDT meeting 12.30pm Wednesday - Clinical Sciences Building Departmental Educational meeting 8.30am Friday - Clinical Sciences Building IBD MDT 1-2pm Friday at Ward 20 seminar room Hepto-biliary MDT meeting 2pm Thursday - Clinical Sciences Building Other duties will include attendance at administration/research sessions, participation in clinical audit and responsibility for compliance with personal continuing medical education requirements with the support of the Trust. The appointee is also responsible for maintaining awareness of professional guidelines such as duties of a doctor and of the GMC performance procedures and acting in accordance with them. A provisional timetable is shown below, and this will be mutually agreed according to the training needs with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director on behalf of the Trust.
