Job Title: Kitchen Assistant
Job Summary:
Kitchen Assistants provide essential support in food preparation and kitchen operations within environments such as restaurants, hotels, care homes, hospitals, and catering facilities. They assist chefs and kitchen staff in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient kitchen while ensuring food hygiene standards are upheld. Kitchen Assistants play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of kitchen services and high standards of food safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Food Preparation:
Assist with basic food preparation tasks such as washing, peeling, and chopping ingredients
Prepare simple dishes under the supervision of chefs
Support meal service by ensuring ingredients and utensils are ready
Kitchen Support:
Assist chefs and kitchen staff during busy service periods
Ensure all kitchen equipment and utensils are clean and ready for use
Help with setting up and closing down the kitchen
Hygiene & Safety:
Maintain a clean and hygienic kitchen environment at all times
Wash dishes, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment
Follow food safety and hygiene regulations (e.g., HACCP)
Dispose of waste safely and appropriately
Clean work surfaces, storage areas, fridges, and freezers
Stock & Storage:
Receive, check, and store deliveries appropriately
Ensure proper food storage and stock rotation (FIFO)
Monitor stock levels and report shortages
Administrative & Team Support:
Follow instructions from chefs and supervisors
Work effectively as part of the kitchen team
Report any hazards, damages, or maintenance issues
Training & Development:
Participate in training related to food safety and kitchen operations
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of hygiene standards and procedures
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Basic Food Hygiene Certificate (desirable)
Previous kitchen or catering experience is an advantage
Skills & Attributes:
Good communication and teamwork skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Strong attention to detail and cleanliness
Reliable, hardworking, and proactive attitude
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods
Ability to lift and carry kitchen items safely
Ability to work in a warm and busy kitchen environment
