Summary

Chelmsford City Racecourse is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Head Grounds Person to support the Head Grounds Person and Clerk of the Course in maintaining our racing surface and grounds to the highest standards of safety, performance, and presentation. This is a key operational role, helping to ensure the track, parade rings, lawns, and external areas are prepared to an exceptional standard for racing and events throughout the year. Flexibility is essential, as the role includes racedays, weekends, Bank Holidays, and busy periods.

As Assistant Head Grounds Person, you will assist in the preparation and maintenance of the racing surface and support the supervision of the Grounds Team on racedays and non-racedays. You will maintain irrigation systems and seasonal turf programmes, ensuring parade rings, lawns, and external areas meet presentation standards. The role also includes overseeing the safe operation and basic maintenance of grounds machinery and equipment, managing materials and supplies within budget, and ensuring full compliance with Health & Safety, COSHH, and racing regulations.

We are looking for someone with proven experience in turf management or grounds maintenance, ideally within a sports turf, racecourse, or equestrian environment. You should be confident in supporting a small practical team and competent in the safe use and maintenance of grounds machinery. Flexibility to work racedays, weekends, and public holidays is essential. A full UK driving licence and NVQ Level 2 in Sports Turf Management or equivalent would be advantageous.

In return, we offer the opportunity to work in a dynamic and professional sporting environment, a key operational role supporting raceday delivery, a competitive salary dependent on experience, and staff benefits including raceday privileges. If you are a motivated turf professional who takes pride in delivering high standards and contributing to a successful racecourse operation, please submit your CV and covering letter to HR@chelmsfordcityracecourse.com
