Temporary Works Engineer
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Temporary Works Engineer, the temporary works designer will work in the design team, carrying out detailed design and checking of temporary works and minor permanent works for civil engineering. They will provide technical support to assist with Barhale’s operational activities for our projects across the UK. The role is based in Blackfriars, but as we provide national coverage, there will be occasional travel throughout the UK to Barhale projects and sites.
The temporary works design includes support of excavations, falsework and formwork, access scaffolds, working platforms, shaft/tunnel installation, plant equipment, and lifting operations. Reinforced concrete shaft bases, roof slabs, steelwork fabrications, and pipework thrust restraints.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review detailed technical designs, including calculations, drawings, risk assessments, and design certificates, ensuring accuracy and compliance for Barhale projects
- Develop preliminary designs for tendering and pricing, coordinating independent checks and securing third‑party technical approvals (e.g., CAT 3 checks, Form A, Form B, and AFC for rail projects)
- Ensure all design outputs comply with CDM 2015 regulations and meet required health, safety, and quality standards
- Provide technical guidance to site teams on temporary works, construction methodologies, and design intent
- Identify, propose, and develop value‑engineered solutions throughout both design and construction phases to improve efficiency and reduce costs
- Support the development and continuous improvement of design processes, procedures, and technical standards across the business
- Prepare or obtain design‑related pricing information to support estimating and work‑winning activities
About you
Essential
- Degree in civil engineering or equivalent
- Current relevant CSCS card
- Incorporated or chartered with a relevant professional institution (or working towards achieving such a qualification)
- Thorough knowledge of engineering management, construction processes and technical design
- Demonstrable experience in a combination of site work and design office roles
- Experience in the Water, Rail, and Power sectors - Experience in the detailed design of permanent and temporary works, including the use of CAD - Working knowledge of relevant industry specifications (CESWI, Network Rail, Highways, Building Regulations)
- Experience in obtaining third-party technical approval of proposals
- Clear analytical thinking with the ability to identify and manage risks
- Professional judgement to balance commercial and compliance risks to achieve positive outcomes
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Able to work independently and manage own time and tasks
- Good team worker with the ability to exercise own judgement
