Summary
Do you want to protect and enhance the environment? We have an exciting opportunity to join our Radioactive Substances Regulation Teams based in Hertfordshire and North London (covering Kent and South London) and/or Thames (covering Solent and South Downs, Wessex and Devon and Cornwall).
Responsible for the regulation of a portfolio of sites you will ensure compliance under the Environmental Permitting Regulations. The Environment Agency regulates a range of activities that affect the environment, people and the economy. You will have the opportunity to create a better place for people and wildlife through the regulation of radioactive substances.
You will:
- Ensure radioactive materials are kept and used in a secure environment.
- Undertake inspections and audits at permitted sites, ensuring compliance, taking enforcement action when required and contributing to both the security of radioactive sources and protection of the environment.
- Assess the impacts of discharges of radioactive materials into the environment to ensure the protection of the public and the environment.
- Respond to and investigate incidents and non-compliance events making sure suitable preventative and protective action is implemented.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment. Full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team
We have an opportunity in two of our Radioactive Substances Regulation teams. You could be part of our team based near Farnham or Wallingford responsible for Radioactive Substances regulation across our Wessex, Devon and Cornwall, Solent and South Downs and Thames Areas. Or you could be part of the Radioactive Substances Regulation Team based in Welwyn Garden City, responsible for Radioactive Substance regulation across Hertfordshire and North London (HNL) and Kent and South London (KSL).
Experience/skills required
Educated to degree level or equivalent with a good understanding of radiological and environmental issues.
The post is subject to a market forces factor additional salary payment subject to relevant qualifying experience.
You must have relevant experience in a regulatory or industrial role, demonstrating strong communication skills and the ability to take a risk-based approach to your decision making and work planning.
Legal, regulatory training will be provided as necessary, as will opportunities for relevant continuous professional development.
This role requires handling of sensitive information and will require successful security vetting checks.
You will be required to travel and to occasionally stay overnight so a UK driving licence is essential.
