Summary
JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY To provide, with the two current Consultant Medical Virologists, the delivery of the Virology Services locally, regionally and nationally. Liaises with: o Lead Clinician, Service Manager, Operations Lead o Consultant Medical Microbiologists o Infection prevention & Control team o Health care scientists (clinical scientists, biomedical scientists, support and clerical staff) o Pathology CSU Clinical Director, General Manager and Head of Professions o UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) o LTHT and primary care staff, regional infection specialists serviced by the laboratory in addition to external clinical users of the laboratory. To be responsible for providing specialist clinical expertise and strategic direction to the Virology Laboratory by expanding and developing practice, implementing Clinical Governance, setting department policy on service provision and delivering improved outcomes within the Clinical Virology Service. To be responsible for providing a comprehensive scientific service (analytical, interpretive and clinical advisory) as a Consultant in the Virology Department to medical and other healthcare professionals to nationally accepted standards, acting as an expert in the area. To provide, with the other Consultant Medical Virologists, an integrated Clinical Virology Service, offering expert virology clinical advice at consultant level to medical teams and Infection Prevention Control within LTHT, Leeds community health care professionals, Consultant Infection Specialists at regional hospitals and public health specialists at the Health Protection Team. To provide and be jointly accountable for the service delivery of a broad range of complex, specialised and non-routine analyses requiring highly specialist technical expertise in virology alongside the two current Consultant Medical Virologists and working with the operational teams & service manager. To lead and be jointly accountable for the development and introduction of new molecular and serological assays in Virology. To be Lead Clinical Scientist for the Microbiology Department for the Principal, Registered, HSST and STP Clinical Scientists. The role will include recruitment, appraisal and job planning alongside the Lead Clinician for Microbiology and Microbiology Service Manager and responsibility (delegated as appropriate) for the training of HSST and STP clinical scientist who are employed either by LTHT or by other Trusts and are on training rotations at LTHT To undertake clinical audit of service effectiveness and to contribute to discussions on clinical audit in other medical specialities.
