Summary

32.5 hours per week - Term Time

Bridgend County Borough Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Specialist Support Officer to join the Communication and Relationships Team (CART) - a dynamic, multi-disciplinary service dedicated to supporting schools in meeting the needs of children and young people across the county with ASD, Emotional, Social and Behaviour Development and Speech and Language Needs.

About the Team / Service Area

The Communication and Relationships Team works closely with schools, families, and partner agencies to provide early intervention, targeted support, and specialist guidance. The team delivers consultation, assessment, behaviour support, and capacity-building for school staff to improve outcomes for learners.

About the Role

As a Specialist Support Officer, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, evidence-informed support to schools. Working as part of a collaborative team, you will:

- Provide targeted interventions, modelling effective strategies and practical approaches.

- Support the development of Individual Behaviour Plans, Personalised Plans and risk assessments.

- Offer guidance, training, and capacity-building for school staff.

- Contribute to multi-agency planning and child-centred problem-solving.

- Assist with crisis management, de-escalation, and relational approaches when required.

- Help monitor, review, and evaluate support plans to ensure positive outcomes for learners.

This is a varied and rewarding role, ideal for someone who is passionate about improving the experiences of children and young people through relational, communication-focused, trauma-informed practice.

- Skills & Knowledge

- Strong understanding of child development, communication needs, behaviour, and emotional regulation.

- Knowledge of inclusive, relational, and trauma-informed approaches in educational settings.

- Ability to offer practical advice and model effective strategies for staff.

- Skilled at building positive, trusting relationships with learners, families, and professionals.

Experience

Experience of working with children and young people, particularly those with additional learning needs.

Experience supporting schools or educational settings is highly desirable.

Experience contributing to plans such as IBPs, RAs, or PSPs.

Personal Qualities

Compassionate, patient, and child-centred.

Confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills.

Adaptable, reflective, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Able to remain calm and solution-focused in challenging situations.

The ability to deliver the service through the medium of Welsh is highly desirable; however, support and training will be provided for candidates who are willing to develop their Welsh language skills.

Protecting children, young people or adults at risk is a core responsibility of all council employees.

An Enhanced with Childrens Barred list criminal records check by the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) is a requirement for this post.
